{"id":75081,"date":"2022-02-10T23:18:56","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T21:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=75081"},"modified":"2022-02-10T23:18:56","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T21:18:56","slug":"ebrd-country-strategy-for-egypt-focuses-on-accelerating-green-economy-transition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/ebrd-country-strategy-for-egypt-focuses-on-accelerating-green-economy-transition\/","title":{"rendered":"EBRD country strategy for Egypt focuses on accelerating green economy transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Board of Directors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/ebrd-eu-gcf-allocate-82-m-for-egyptian-private-sector-smes\/\">European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)<\/a> has approved\u00a0its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/what-we-do\/strategies-and-policies\/egypt-strategy.pdf\">country\u00a0strategy\u00a0<\/a>for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>, which focuses on three key priorities identified in cooperation with the Egyptian government and aligned with its ambitious, recently launched reform program.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In the period from 2022 to 2027, the Bank will focus on three strategic priorities; promoting a more inclusive economy for Egyptian businesses, women and youth, accelerating Egypt\u2019s green economy transition, and enhancing the country\u2019s competitiveness by supporting private-sector growth and strengthening governance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The EBRD began operating in Egypt 10 years ago and has since invested more than \u20ac8.7 billion in 145 projects of which 76 per cent are in the private sector.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Over the past decade, the Bank focused on investment in renewable energy, improving sustainable infrastructure, strengthening the competitiveness of the private sector (including small firms), as well as promoting greater job and training opportunities for women, young people and people in remote areas.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Half of the EBRD\u2019s investments are in sustainable infrastructure, contributing to the green economy and promoting energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bank contributed to the diversification of Egypt\u2019s energy mix with a commitment to finance an additional 1.6 GW of installed renewable energy capacity and an expected 8,303 kiloton reduction in CO<sub>2<\/sub>e emissions (equivalent to emissions from the electricity use of about 1.4 million homes or the consumption of more than 17 million barrels of oil).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Strengthening access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the Bank extended close to \u20ac1 billion to 19 private financial institutions and invested \u20ac128 million into SME equity funds to ensure the availability of long-term financing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bank also launched its Women in Business program and Youth in Business program to help develop financial skills.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition, the EBRD launched the first sector-skills platform in Egypt facilitating access to training and work-based learning opportunities for young people.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Heike Harmgart, EBRD Managing Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region, said: \u201cImplementing the new strategy, the Bank will continue to couple its investments with robust policy engagement to help facilitate greater private-sector participation and enhanced corporate and economic governance in the public sector.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cGreen transformation is a priority for the EBRD and for Egypt, which will host COP27 this year.
