{"id":74864,"date":"2022-02-04T17:07:30","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T15:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=74864"},"modified":"2022-02-04T17:07:30","modified_gmt":"2022-02-04T15:07:30","slug":"un-social-media-campaign-on-environmental-health-impacts-of-microplastics-of-cigarettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/un-social-media-campaign-on-environmental-health-impacts-of-microplastics-of-cigarettes\/","title":{"rendered":"UN social media campaign on environmental, health impacts of microplastics of cigarettes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The United Nations Environment Program (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/unep-backing-22-universities-in-8-african-countries-to-become-green\/\">UNEP<\/a>) and the Secretariat of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a>\u00a0FCTC) will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fctc.who.int\/newsroom\/news\/item\/01-02-2022-unep-secretariat-of-the-who-fctc-partner-to-combat-microplastics-in-cigarettes\">launch<\/a> a social media campaign to raise awareness about the environmental and health impacts of microplastics in cigarette butts, the most discarded waste item worldwide.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The partnership is facilitated through UNEP\u2019s Clean Seas campaign, a global coalition comprised of 63 countries devoted to ending marine plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It combines the two agencies\u2019 respective experience on the health and policy dimensions of tobacco products, and research and advocacy on plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Globally, more than six trillion cigarettes are produced annually, each containing filters, or butts, that are mainly composed of microplastics known as cellulose acetate fibers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">However, cigarette butts that are not properly disposed of get broken down by factors such as sunlight and moisture, thus releasing microplastics, heavy metals and many other chemicals which impact ecosystems\u2019 health and services.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Cigarette butts account for more than 766 million kilograms of toxic trash each year. They are also the most common plastic litter on beaches, making marine ecosystems more susceptible to microplastic leakages.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">When ingested, the hazardous chemicals in microplastics cause long-term mortality in marine life, including birds, fish, mammals, plants and reptiles.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">These microplastics also enter the food chain and are associated with serious human health impacts, which can include changes to genetics, brain development, respiration rates and more.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The social media campaign will aim to engage influencers, as well as UNEP\u2019s Goodwill Ambassadors and Young Champions of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It will also include a political advocacy angle by highlighting a recent\u202fEuropean Union directive\u202f\u00a0that requires all tobacco products with plastic filters to be labelled clearly.
