{"id":73012,"date":"2021-11-30T14:01:35","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=73012"},"modified":"2021-11-30T14:01:35","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:01:35","slug":"ghana-palestine-peru-win-unesco-japan-prize-on-education-for-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/ghana-palestine-peru-win-unesco-japan-prize-on-education-for-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana, Palestine, Peru win UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A\u00a0literacy\u00a0project\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/ghanaian-businesswoman-launches-e100-m-fund-to-support-african-fashion-smes\/\">Ghana<\/a>,\u00a0a program on\u00a0media for social change in Palestine,\u00a0and an initiative for the\u00a0protection\u00a0of indigenous cultures in Peru won the 2021 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/prize-esd\">UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The laureates were selected\u00a0by an\u00a0independent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/prize-esd\/jury\">International Jury<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0will receive an award of $50,000\u00a0each.\u00a0113 nominations were submitted by the governments of 54 Member States and\u00a08\u00a0organizations in official partnership with UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The main selection criteria were the projects\u2019 potential for transformation, their innovative quality and ability to embrace all three dimensions of sustainability: The economy,\u00a0the\u00a0society\u00a0and the environment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvi.org\/\">World Vision<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvi.org\/\" data-extlink=\"\">\u00a0Ghana<\/a>\u00a0was chosen for its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvi.org\/ghana\/our-work\/education\" data-extlink=\"\">Unlock Literacy Project (UL)<\/a>\u201d,\u00a0which promotes a holistic approach to the development of literacy focusing on critical thinking, a core competency for sustainability. The project aims to empower children at the primary level\u00a0to think critically about\u00a0local issues and take actions, as well as to make reading exciting through multi-lingual education.\u00a0Going beyond traditional literacy\u00a0approaches,\u00a0the project is rewarded\u00a0its\u00a0action-oriented,\u00a0peer-to-peer\u00a0approach to\u00a0learning\u00a0involving\u00a0whole-communities. It carries potential for further scaling up\u00a0nationally\u00a0through cooperation with formal education.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mdc.birzeit.edu\/index-en.html\" data-extlink=\"\">Media Development Center of the\u00a0Birzeit\u00a0University<\/a>\u00a0in Palestine views media as an integral part of social change and sustainable development and\u00a0as a means\u00a0to\u00a0empower\u00a0women and men living in\u00a0marginalized communities\u00a0with skills to participate in public life. The project \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mediaguide.fi\/mediaguide\/language\/ar\/\" data-extlink=\"\">Media and Information Literacy for Sustainable Societies<\/a>\u201d aims at developing media and information literacy through practical learning-by-doing and training through dialogue.\u00a0The project is rewarded\u00a0for its youth-centered approach in generating societal changes through dialogue and cooperation, while focusing on the role of media in\u00a0encouraging\u00a0the participation of citizens in public life.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In\u00a0remote areas\u00a0of\u00a0the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kusikawsay.org\/en\/\" data-extlink=\"\">Kusi Kawsay Andean School &amp; \u00d1awpa \u00d1an Cultural Events<\/a>\u00a0have been promoting\u00a0the protection and preservation of Indigenous people\u2019s rights, culture,\u00a0values\u00a0and livelihoods over the last decade. Based on Waldorf pedagogy, the project is\u00a0recognized for addressing many key elements of education for sustainable development, namely respect for indigenous and local culture and values that promotes human dignity, community-based approaches and action to respond to\u00a0global challenges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Funded by the Government of Japan, the Prize rewards exceptional projects and programs on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/themes\/education-sustainable-development\">education for sustainable\u00a0development<\/a>\u00a0undertaken by institutions, organizations or other entities in the field of ESD to generate and scale up action at all levels of education and learning, and contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0literacy\u00a0project\u00a0in Ghana,\u00a0a program on\u00a0media for social change in Palestine,\u00a0and an initiative for the\u00a0protection\u00a0of indigenous cultures in Peru won the 2021 \u00a0UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development.
