{"id":71965,"date":"2021-10-31T23:56:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-31T21:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=71965"},"modified":"2021-10-31T23:56:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-31T21:56:15","slug":"eight-startups-pursuing-a-sustainable-blue-economy-via-blueswell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/eight-startups-pursuing-a-sustainable-blue-economy-via-blueswell\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight startups pursuing a sustainable blue economy via BlueSwell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The sustainable growth of a blue economy doesn\u2019t have to come at the cost of ocean health, say leaders from BlueSwell, a Boston-based incubator run by SeaAhead Inc. and the New England Aquarium.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blueswell.sea-ahead.com\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blueswell.sea-ahead.com\/\" aria-label=\"BlueSwell\">BlueSwell<\/a>\u00a0has chosen a second cohort of startups supporting ocean health, tackling areas including plastics remediation, water sensor technology and sea urchin aquaculture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cHumans are heavily reliant on the ocean for many reasons, and as global populations continue to grow, so too will the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/desa\/exploring-potential-blue-economy\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/desa\/exploring-potential-blue-economy\" aria-label=\"blue economy\">blue economy<\/a>,\u2019 including in the U.S.,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.andersoncabotcenterforoceanlife.org\/about-us\/leadership\/john-mandelman\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.andersoncabotcenterforoceanlife.org\/about-us\/leadership\/john-mandelman\/\" aria-label=\"John Mandelman\">John Mandelman<\/a>, vice president and chief scientist with the aquarium\u2019s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">About 40% of the U.S. population lives in coastal counties,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/stories\/noaa-finalizes-strategy-to-enhance-growth-of-american-blue-economy\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/stories\/noaa-finalizes-strategy-to-enhance-growth-of-american-blue-economy\" aria-label=\"according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2018, the\u00a0blue economy\u00a0supported 2.3 million American jobs, contributing about $373 billion to the nation\u2019s gross domestic product through activities from tourism and recreation to shipping, transportation, fishing, power generation, research, and goods and services.\u00a0The value of global ocean economy is expected to double to $3 trillion over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis growth also places substantial stress on the world\u2019s ocean\u2014which is already facing unprecedented direct and indirect threats due to climate change\u2014from increased industrial activities, such as fisheries, ship traffic and coastal development, to name a few &#8230;\u201d Mandelman says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe responsible growth of the blue economy depends on the advent and\/or scaling of technological advances small and large, with a strong commitment to conservation. The BlueSwell program focuses on incubating scalable technologies in a variety of domains, including those related to sustainable food from, and renewable energy in, the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The startups chosen in the latest group include Aristotle\u2019s Lantern, with a goal of creating urchin ranching solutions for the restoration of kelp habitat and urchin fisheries in California and New England, and Blue Meadow, developing an autonomous monitoring robot that helps ocean farmers improve yields and monitor their sites remotely.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blueswell.sea-ahead.com\/cohort-2\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffkart\/2019\/02\/19\/startup-says-robot-divers-can-help-remove-urchins-restore-oceans\/\" aria-label=\"Startup Says Robot Divers Can Help Remove Urchins, Restore Oceans\">BlueSwell cohort II startups<\/a>\u00a0will receive $35,000 each, including Can I Recycle This? and Ithaca Clean Energy, along with Mabel Systems, Oceanic Labs, Organicin Scientific and USEFULL.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cEach startup has the ability to use the funds to support the needs of their company during the course of the program, including on expenses such as travel and product development,\u201d says Alissa Peterson, cofounder and executive director of SeaAhead, a benefit corporation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This year\u2019s cohort started Oct. 5; the first half of the program focuses on helping the teams develop a clear value proposition, understanding their customers and the impact of their innovations. Each startup is matched with mentors and connected to potential customers and partners to gather feedback and industry input. A Demo Day takes place in March.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cLast year\u2019s virtual Demo Day attracted nearly 400 participants, which demonstrates the large interest the community has in these types of innovations,\u201d Peterson says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cIt is a broader mission of both SeaAhead and the New England Aquarium to engage a wide audience in taking a solution mindset when it comes to ocean sustainability.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis engagement has the potential for future knock-on effects, including influencing the community to use their consumer spending in ways that are beneficial to the ocean, such as supporting local sustainable seafood and decreasing single-use plastics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blueswell.sea-ahead.com\/cohort-1\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blueswell.sea-ahead.com\/cohort-1\" aria-label=\"The first cohort\">The first cohort<\/a>\u00a0has reportedly raised more than $6 million since the program started in 2020.
