{"id":71289,"date":"2021-10-09T22:54:53","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T20:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=71289"},"modified":"2021-10-09T22:54:53","modified_gmt":"2021-10-09T20:54:53","slug":"un-recognizes-clean-healthy-sustainable-environment-as-human-right-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/un-recognizes-clean-healthy-sustainable-environment-as-human-right-for-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"UN recognizes clean, healthy, sustainable environment as human right for first time\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The United Nations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Human Rights Council<\/a>\u00a0has recognized having a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right for first time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In resolution 48\/13, the Council called on States\u00a0around the world\u00a0to work together, and with other partners, to implement this newly recognized right.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The text, proposed by Costa Rica, the Maldives, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland, was passed with 43 votes in favor and 4 abstentions\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0from Russia, India, China and Japan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At the same time, through a second resolution (48\/14), the Council also increased its focus on the human rights impacts of climate change by establishing a Special Rapporteur dedicated specifically to that issue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=27635&amp;LangID=E\">statement<\/a>, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, called on\u00a0Member\u00a0States to take bold actions to give prompt and real effect to the right to a healthy environment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Ms. Bachelet said that, having long called for such a step,\u00a0she\u00a0was \u201cgratified\u201d\u00a0that\u00a0the decision \u201cclearly recognizes environmental degradation and climate change as interconnected human rights crises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cBold action is now required to ensure this resolution on the right to a healthy environment serves as a springboard to push for transformative economic, social and environmental policies that will protect people and nature,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At the beginning of the current session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Human Rights Council<\/a>, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=27443\">High Commissioner described<\/a>\u202fthe triple planetary threats of climate change, pollution and nature loss as the single greatest human rights challenge of the current era.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0new\u00a0resolution acknowledges the damage inflicted by climate change and environmental destruction on millions of people across the world. It also underlines that the most vulnerable segments of the population are more acutely impacted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u201cWe must build on this momentum to move beyond the false separation of environmental action and protection of human rights. It is all too clear that neither goal can be achieved without the other\u201d, Michelle\u00a0Bachelet said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Costa Rica&#8217;s ambassador Catalina\u00a0Devandas\u00a0Aguilar, one of the co-sponsors of the resolution,\u00a0said the decision will &#8220;send a powerful message to communities around the world struggling with climate hardship that they are not alone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The decision comes weeks before\u00a0the\u00a0crucial\u00a0UN\u202fclimate change summit,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\">COP26<\/a>, happening in early November in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/environmental-health#tab=tab_1\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>,\u00a024% of\u00a0all global deaths,\u00a0roughly 13.7 million deaths a year,\u00a0are linked to the environment,\u00a0due to risks such as air pollution and chemical exposure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations\u00a0Human Rights Council\u00a0has recognized having a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a human right for first time.
