{"id":69472,"date":"2021-08-18T22:28:10","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T20:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=69472"},"modified":"2021-08-18T22:28:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T20:28:10","slug":"us-allocates-24-m-for-projects-on-capturing-carbon-emissions-from-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/us-allocates-24-m-for-projects-on-capturing-carbon-emissions-from-air\/","title":{"rendered":"US allocates $24 m for projects on capturing carbon emissions from air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The US Department of Energy (DOE) earmarked $24 million for nine research projects aiming to explore and develop new methods of capturing and storing carbon from the air.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Direct\u00a0Air\u00a0Capture\u00a0(DAC)\u00a0is\u00a0an\u00a0expanding field in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/dhl-orders-1st-ever-e-cargo-planes-to-form-worlds-1st-e-express-network\/\">decarbonization<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0key\u00a0facet\u00a0of the plan\u00a0to\u00a0achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Finding\u00a0ways to remove and store carbon\u00a0directly from the air\u00a0is an absolute necessity\u00a0in our fight against the climate crisis,&#8221; said\u00a0Secretary of Energy Jennifer\u00a0M.\u00a0Granholm.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;This investment in carbon capture technology research through universities and DOE laboratories will position America as a leader in this growing field, create good-paying jobs, and help make our carbon-free future a reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Studies indicate curbing carbon emissions alone will not be sufficient, and innovative approaches like direct air capture will be required to combat the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Direct air capture\u00a0technology\u00a0is a growing field\u00a0that\u00a0still\u00a0requires\u00a0significant\u00a0investments in research and development to create a\u00a0cost-effective and\u00a0economically viable\u00a0technology\u00a0that can be deployed at scale\u00a0and in time to meet the urgent needs of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">These new research projects will support breakthroughs in understanding\u00a0how to overcome\u00a0the\u00a0limitations of\u00a0currently available technologies,\u00a0including inefficient energy usage,\u00a0with the goal of building a\u00a0research foundation of\u00a0entirely new and more effective approaches\u00a0for\u00a0direct removal of carbon dioxide from\u00a0the\u00a0air.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The nine awards are led by two national laboratories and seven universities, including North Carolina A&amp;T State University, an Historically Black University. The awards tackle topics including discovery of novel materials, chemistries, and processes for extraction of carbon dioxide from air, and combined experimental and computational studies on carbon dioxide capture for sequestration or reuse.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The selected projects include a project of the Washington State University and Oklahoma State University\u00a0on using energy efficient approaches to convert carbon dioxide capture into useful products. The project received an award amounting to $4.8 million.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, a project of the University of Illinois, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Case Western Reserve Universitywas also among selected projects as it offered a novel approaches that use electricity or light to control the capture and\/or release of carbon dioxide. The project received a $9 million award.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, the selected projects included a project of North Carolina A&amp;T State University, Oregon State University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on exploring new materials and chemical compounds with the potential for improved efficiency for carbon dioxide capture and regeneration. The project received an award of $6.6 million.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A project of Northwestern University was also included among selected projects. The project\u00a0examined how the dynamical behavior of promising carbon capture systems impacts their carbon dioxide capture and release.
