Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Flipflopi, the world\u2019s first sailing boat made from 100%<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/mars-to-use-recycled-plastic-in-packaging-some-pet-food-brands\/\"> recycled plastic<\/a>, is joining forces with the UN Environment Program\u2019s Clean Seas Campaign once more, this time embarking on an expedition by sailing around Africa\u2019s largest freshwater ecosystem &#8211; Lake Victoria. The voyage aims to send an urgent message to the East Africa community on the need to end the unnecessary single-use plastic scourge that is threatening the region.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The current state of Lake Victoria, supporting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2016\/02\/29\/reviving-lake-victoria-by-restoring-livelihoods\">40 million East Africans<\/a>, through food supply and livelihoods, symbolizes the catastrophic effects of human activities and climate change, among other issues, resulting in significant water pollution which threatens the health and livelihoods of communities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/283784536_First_evidence_of_microplastics_in_the_African_Great_Lakes_Recovery_from_Lake_Victoria_Nile_perch_and_Nile_tilapia\">study<\/a>\u00a0estimated that 1 in 5 of the fish in Lake Victoria had ingested plastic. Another recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/342187821_Microplastic_pollution_in_surface_water_of_Lake_Victoria\">study<\/a>\u00a0ubiquitously recorded microplastics in surface waters in several sites of Lake Victoria. At the heart of the plastic waste problem is the linear \u2018take-make-dispose\u2019 model of consumption, as products get manufactured, bought, used briefly, and then thrown away.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Flipflopi is an initiative showcasing alternative uses of plastic waste and the possibilities of circular economy \u00a0approaches. Over a three-week period, Flipflopi will sail from Kisumu, Kenya to several locations in Uganda and Tanzania, raising awareness and inspiring communities to adopt circular-waste solutions to beat plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis Lake, Nam Lolwe, matters to me. It must matter to us all. \u00a0Investing in research and development on blue economy investments, improving the health of the lake and riparian environment while ensuring that investments are \u2018lake friendly\u2019 from inception are amongst my priorities\u201d said Governor of Kenya\u2019s Kisumu County Anyang\u2019 Nyong\u2019o.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to address the myriad environmental crises, which can only be done through regional and global consensus on key issues like single-use plastic, and climate change,\u201d said Joyce Msuya, Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP). \u201cFlipflopi is a great African example of the circular economy in action; we are proud to see it start this new journey around Lake Victoria, a shared resource that we must do all we can to protect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Flipflopi\u2019s Lake Victoria expedition will include several stops along the lake engaging community leaders, conservationists, business leaders and policymakers, demonstrating alternate uses of waste plastic and other circular waste models\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/the-east-african-community-eac-end-single-use-plastics-in-east-africa\">calling\u00a0<\/a>for an end to single-use plastics.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cFlipflopi was built to show the world that it is possible to make valuable materials out of waste plastic, and that single-use plastic really does not make sense,\u201d said Ali Skanda, co-founder of the Flipflopi project and builder of the world\u2019s first recycled plastic dhow. \u201cBy sailing around the lake, we aim to inspire people to create their own waste-plastic innovations and adopt circular solutions that will build greener businesses, whilst also taking plastic out of the environment. Together with communities across the Lake Victoria region we hope to bring awareness and innovative solutions to beat pollution and support a green recovery in East Africa\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Flipflopi is an example of innovative circular solutions applied at a national level to the pollution challenge.\u00a0 In Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netfund.go.ke\/our-beneficiaries\/center-for-innovation-science-and-technology-cist-africa-limited\/\">CIST Africa<\/a>\u00a0are making hand sanitizer from invasive water hyacinth.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Flipflopi, the Clean Seas Campaign and partners aims to showcase green innovations as they sail around the lake, and inspire communities and businesses to act against plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">As part of the expedition, the Flipflopi expedition will launch a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/the-east-african-community-eac-end-single-use-plastics-in-east-africa\">petition calling for a regional ban on single-use plastics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Flipflopi initiative is supported and by various partners\u00a0 including the national governments of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.president.go.ke\/\">Kenya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gou.go.ug\/\">Uganda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzania.go.tz\/\">Tanzania<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\">UNEP<\/a>, The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/foreign-commonwealth-development-office\">UK\u2019s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office\u00a0<\/a>(FCDO), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afd.fr\/en\">French Development Agency<\/a>\u00a0(AFD), The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/\">European Union<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/museumfortheun.org\/\">UN Live<\/a>, as well as the private sector, including the law firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africalegalnetwork.com\/kenya\/\">Anjarwalla and Khanna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flipflopi, the world\u2019s first sailing boat made from 100% recycled plastic, is joining forces with the UN Environment Program\u2019s Clean Seas Campaign once more, this time embarking on an expedition by sailing around Africa\u2019s largest freshwater ecosystem &#8211; Lake Victoria.
