An initiative was launched in Brazil to plant 200,000 trees<\/a> in memory of the roughly 200,000 lives lost to COVID-19<\/a> in the South America state.<\/p>\n

The initiative \u2013 which was launched in December 2020 – will run until\u00a0World Environment Day<\/a>\u00a0on June 5, 2021.<\/p>\n

Bereaved families and civil society organizations, with the support of the\u00a0Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact<\/a>, which include some of Brazil\u2019s most respected restoration scientists, launched the tree-planting, wildlife conservation and restoration drive to honor the memories of those who have lost their lives to COVID-19 and to thank health workers. The Pact is helping restoration efforts across 17 states in Brazil.<\/p>\n

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is helping the Remembrance Forests campaign to raise its profile and visibility in line with the\u00a0UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030<\/a>.\u00a0Among other things, it will be engaging with civil society organizations to ensure that the native tree seedlings are properly nurtured to maturity.<\/p>\n

“This action is very meaningful due to the fact that trees are life and a connection with mother nature,\u201d says Rafael da Silva de Lima from S\u00e3o Paulo whose father, Reginaldo Alves de Lima, and cousin, Edna Maria de Almeida, were victims of the virus.<\/p>\n

The organizers will ensure that a diversity of native tree species from the Atlantic forest region are planted, including\u00a0Inga sp.<\/em>, guava (Psidium guajava<\/em>), Jacaranda (Jacaranda caroba<\/em>), Ipe (Tebabuia sp.<\/em>), grumixama (Eugenia brasiliensis<\/em>), and several species from the botanic families\u00a0Myrtaceae, Malvaceae<\/em>,\u00a0Lauraceae and Fabaceae<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Initially, the plan was to plant 6,500 trees on a four-hectare site in Rio de Janeiro State, which is also the habitat of a tiny endangered monkey called the golden lion tamarin. The monkey is found only in the Atlantic Coastal Forest in southeastern Brazil. The\u00a0Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Mico-Le\u00e3o-Dourado<\/a>\u00a0(AMLD), a non-governmental organization, is preparing the site.<\/p>\n

Later on, more than a dozen sites in the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve and in Pontal do Paranapanema, in the western part of S\u00e3o Paulo State, will be planted by\u00a0APOENA<\/a>, a civil society organization that works on restoring riparian forests in the Parana river basin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a great initiative because it shows multiple dimensions of restoration \u2013 namely that restoration is about healing our relationship with nature and at the same time it\u2019s a healing experience for ourselves,\u201d said Tim Christophersen, head of UNEP\u2019s Nature for Climate Branch. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about planting trees for carbon benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
