The World Food Program (WFP)<\/a> appeals for $5 billion to set up a rapid-response fund and do its utmost to make sure famine does not happen.<\/p>\n

Margot van der Velden<\/a>, Head of WFP Emergencies, warned that four countries are on the brink of catastrophe.<\/p>\n

According to figures released in December, there are currently 151 million people facing acute hunger, including 31 million at severe risk across 40 countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose numbers are only going to grow in 2021,\u201d says van der Velden. \u201cI don’t see any reason why they wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the coming year, she adds, \u201cYou’ll continue to see most of the severe food insecurity in areas where there is conflict\u2014coupled with access constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yemen<\/a>, where WFP assists 13 million people in its biggest operation,\u00a0South Sudan<\/a>,\u00a0Burkina Faso<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Nigeria\u00a0<\/a>are on the brink while\u00a0Afghanistan<\/a>, the\u00a0Central African Republic<\/a>, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Sudan, Uganda, Venezuela and\u00a0Zimbabwe score particularly worryingly on the\u00a0IPC (Integrated Food Security Classification)<\/a>\u00a0scale.<\/p>\n

As ever, the key culprit is conflict\u2014fighting between warring parties cuts off humanitarian access to communities already grappling with the effects of climate change, coronavirus restrictions, not to mention social and political upheavals.<\/p>\n

What results is low food intake, high rates of acute malnutrition, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to make sure that we anticipate even better \u2026 political instability, climate-related or economic crises \u2026. we have to absolutely strengthen early warnings\u2014anticipation, preparedness and capacity are critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

A key lesson of the current pandemic, she says, is that \u201cpopulation groups such as refugees fall through the cracks \u2026 we need to pay special attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

By December, for instance, 280,000 people had fled their homes due to the conflict in the Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray region while in northern Mozambique, nearly 565,000 had become displaced escaping\u00a0violence in Cabo Delgado.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThey are not falling within the national response plans or the social protection schemes,\u201d says van der Velden. She fears that local problems can expand into regional ones if they are not addressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see things happening that can become very big,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

In countries such as Zimbabwe, there are problems surrounding urbanization. \u201cLook at climate change,\u201d says van der Velden, \u201clook at what is expected in terms of water and resources that may not be available, and how that will affect millions and millions and millions of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Remote data collection and monitoring are critical to answering guiding questions such as, \u201cDo we have the operational footprint that we need? Are we targeting the right people? Are we getting to the right people?\u00a0What are the obstacles to overcome?\u201d<\/p>\n

WFP works with governments to make sure \u201cthey have the capacity to respond in whatever shape and form might come up, be that technical support or through training,\u201d\u00a0she says.<\/p>\n

That characterizes its Latin America operation to a large degree\u2014although Guatemala and Honduras were hit hard by COVID-19, the region did not turn out to be the tinderbox WFP feared it would become back in March. But with violence and poverty increasing by the day, it is by no means out of the woods, says van der Velden.<\/p>\n

Since the outset of the pandemic, WFP has managed to deliver programs that save and change lives against the odds\u2014the projection that the IPC figure of 135 million food insecure people for this time last year would be pushed to 270 million by December didn\u2019t materialize.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s thanks in no small part to\u00a0WFP\u2019s Common Services<\/a>\u00a0stepping up to serve the wider humanitarian community.<\/p>\n

When commercial airlines were grounded, it mobilized\u00a0<\/a>aircraft to transport both staff and critical medical cargo including PPE to vulnerable locations, setting up humanitarian response hubs in key locations, working closely with partners, including the World Health Organization. Building on this work and on shared resources is \u201cundoubtedly where we need to move towards in 2021,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The efforts of WFP\u2019s 20,000-strong staff in 88 countries were not lost on the\u00a0Nobel Committee which, in October, awarded the world\u2019s biggest humanitarian organization the 2020 Peace Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now WFP needs donors to step up to help beat hunger in 2021\u2014and avert famine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact of the matter is that we have an ever-growing group of people in severe food insecurity and little needs to happen for them to fall.\u201d says van der Velden.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0adds: \u201cI think [in 2021] we need to be very careful to make sure that we don’t fail where we simply cannot fail.\u201d<\/p>\n
