Rome\u2019s rival football clubs – Roma and Lazio – joined hands with the World Food Program (WFP)<\/a> to launch \u201cStop the Waste\u201d campaign within the framework of efforts to support sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n

Lazio players\u00a0sported blue shirts emblazoned with the organization’s logo in support of WFP Italia.\u00a0The drive, now in its third year, aims\u00a0to raise awareness around how food waste plays into the hands of global hunger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Based in Rome, WFP\u00a0feeds 100 million people in more than 80 countries in the face of conflict, climate change and the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Roma players wore their shirts in a match against Torino FC on December 17 at Rome\u2019s Olympic Stadium, kicking off the collaboration.<\/p>\n

Before the game, the club tweeted: \u201cThis evening we will wear a special t-shirt with WFP logo. In the next two years,\u00a0 A.S. Roma football club will promote WFP through a series of joint-initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same ground on December 20, it was\u00a0Lazio’s turn to wear WFP-logo shirts in a match against Napoli.<\/p>\n

WFP\u00a0Deputy Executive Director Amir Abdulla said:\u00a0\u201cWe welcome this initiative …\u00a0which will raise awareness among the Italian public about food waste and the fight against hunger, which still affects 690 million people worldwide. Only working together as a big team\u2014UN, governments, civil society, private sector\u2014can hunger really be defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two clubs were joined by Italy’s\u00a0Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Emanuela Del Re, and Marco Lucchini, Secretary-General of Banco Alimentare,\u00a0an international organization that distributes collected foods to people in need, and which is contributing\u00a0to the partnership.<\/p>\n

As part\u00a0of the collaboration, players are being encouraged\u00a0to advocate for healthy diets in\u00a0public engagements and on social media, while pressing home the importance of reducing food waste.<\/p>\n

The players’ shirts with the WFP Italia logo will be auctioned early next year and revenues will go to the World Food Program. In October WFP was named\u00a02020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.\u00a0<\/p>\n
