Nestl\u00e9<\/a> announced investing $ 30 million under the company’s sustainable packaging drive. These investments will help increase food-grade recycled plastics in the US, a refillable system for pet food in Chile and first-of-its-kind recyclable paper packaging for Maggi bouillon cubes in France.<\/p>\n

This falls within the framework of the company\u2019s plans to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one-third in the same period.<\/p>\n

Eighty seven percent of Nestl\u00e9’s packaging is already recyclable or reusable.<\/p>\n

V\u00e9ronique Cremades-Mathis, Global Head of Sustainable Packaging, Nestl\u00e9, said, “We have made strides in our transformative journey towards a waste-free future, but we know that we have more work to do. As the world’s largest food and beverage company, we’re committed to putting our size and scale to work to tackle the packaging waste problem everywhere that we operate.”<\/p>\n

Even as COVID-19 has presented more challenges, the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging remains the same. Nestl\u00e9 continues to play a leading role in helping solve the issue of plastic pollution through its three-pillar approach launched in January 2019; developing new packaging, shaping a waste-free future and driving new behavior.<\/p>\n

Under the first pillar on developing new packaging, the company is working on transitioning to paper packaging across various formats. For example,\u00a0Smarties<\/em>\u00a0sharing block<\/a>, a popular color-coated chocolate confectionery product, is available in a recyclable paper wrapper in the\u00a0UK.<\/p>\n

Gerber<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Piltti<\/em>\u00a0baby food<\/a>\u00a0use a first-of-its-kind, single material pouch designed to increase recycling value.<\/p>\n

Nespresso<\/a>\u00a0introduced new capsules made with 80% recycled aluminum, an important step towards circularity.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9’s\u00a0water business<\/a>\u00a0has doubled the amount of\u00a0rPET\u00a0used since 2019 across its still water portfolio in the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0to 16.5%.<\/p>\n

Under pillar 2 on shaping a waste-free future, the Nestl\u00e9 Philippines reached plastic neutrality<\/a> in August 2020. That means Nestl\u00e9 collected and co-processed the equivalent amount of plastic as contained in the products sold and prevented the further flow of plastic into landfills and oceans.<\/p>\n

Together with\u00a0Project STOP<\/a>, Nestl\u00e9 creates a sustainable waste management system and helps reduce ocean plastic pollution in Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 embarked on a trial to collect, sort and process\u00a0soft plastics<\/a>\u00a0in Australia.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 is scaling up reusable and refillable options for its Petcare and soluble coffee products, for instance, through collaboration with the\u00a0start-up company MIWA<\/a>\u00a0in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 advocates for the design and implementation of affordable and effective mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility schemes. It has identified 20 countries, accounting for 50% of the company’s plastic usage, where the company will support recycling rates and waste management infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Under pillar 3 on driving new behavior, Nestl\u00e9 is rolling out a sustainable packaging education and training program for over 290’000 employees, to accelerate behavior change and help the company meet its packaging objectives.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 introduced\u00a0a digital platform<\/a>\u00a0to help consumers dispose of their packaging waste appropriately in Italy.<\/p>\n

Nescaf\u00e9 Dolce Gusto\u00a0launched a consumer education campaign to promote recycling in\u00a0Germany<\/a>\u00a0and in\u00a0Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 is driving positive change through school programs, like the\u00a0Tunuyan Verde<\/a>\u00a0project in Argentina.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Algramo<\/a>\u00a0(Chile),\u00a0MIWA<\/a>\u00a0(Switzerland) and\u00a0Loop<\/a>\u00a0(France) pilots of refillable and reusable packaging solutions offer a new shopping experience.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the company announced that it is seeking to identify and support innovative solutions through the\u00a0Nestl\u00e9 Creating Shared Value (CSV) Prize<\/a>, which launches 30 September. In partnership with the non-profit organization Ashoka, the Nestl\u00e9\u00a0CSV\u00a0Prize will award\u00a0CHF\u00a0250 000 in grants for system change innovations in areas such as alternative delivery systems and ground-up solutions to tackle plastic waste.<\/p>\n

The development and testing of new, more environmentally friendly packaging materials is driven by the\u00a0Nestl\u00e9 Institute of Packaging Sciences<\/a>, the food industry\u2019s first such enterprise.<\/p>\n

The institute has around 50 scientists who conduct cutting-edge packaging research to ensure the safety and applicability of new materials. Research outcomes include new refillable or reusable systems, simplified materials, high-performance barrier papers and the introduction of more recycled content to Nestl\u00e9’s packaging.<\/p>\n

The institute collaborates closely with more than 180 packaging experts embedded in Nestl\u00e9’s global\u00a0R&D\u00a0network, as well as with research institutions, start-ups, and suppliers. Nestl\u00e9 will continue to introduce alternative packaging materials and new delivery systems, invest in infrastructure and work with consumers to help solve the packaging waste challenge.<\/p>\n
