{"id":55980,"date":"2020-05-26T18:40:22","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T16:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=55980"},"modified":"2020-05-26T18:40:22","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T16:40:22","slug":"japan-earmarks-6-9-m-to-ditch-plastic-pollution-in-asia-back-iraq-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/japan-earmarks-6-9-m-to-ditch-plastic-pollution-in-asia-back-iraq-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan earmarks $6.9 m to ditch plastic pollution in Asia, back Iraq, Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Japan channeled about $ 6.9 million into supporting four projects of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) which are meant to tackle plastic pollution across Asia and support environmental recovery in Iraq and South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The bulk of the funding will bankroll the second phase of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/japan-and-un-environment-announce-new-cooperation-boost-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/japan-and-un-environment-announce-new-cooperation-boost-knowledge&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1590595726621000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHP7DbK0_JQE9tuxaweC8n9F2fELQ\">CounterMEASURE project<\/a>, which is determining the origins of plastic pollution in some of Asia\u2019s major rivers and has supported establishment of local partnerships for reducing plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The first phase of the year-long project has used novel technologies and methodologies to track plastic pollution to its sources along the Mekong and Ganges rivers. This allows for bespoke policy recommendations to governments to help stop plastic pollution where it is leaking into waterways.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The second phase of the CounterMEASURE project will expand the work of the first, furthering policy and behavior changes in Mekong countries and India and bringing techniques to other locales, such as Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The second phase will also look at the impact of plastic pollution on wildlife, particularly migratory species<strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Japanese grant to bolster plastic waste management in Asia:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A second project under the funding package will support research into how to manage and treat plastic waste throughout Asia. UNEP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/ietc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/ietc\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1590595726621000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFEUUb0y2TCnYH0Sx1xrE2BInqGPg\">International Environmental Technology Center<\/a>\u00a0will be leading the work, looking at how to deploy a digital platform to support environmentally sound management of plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe global pandemic COVID-19 and the generation of additional plastic waste will amplify our urgent needs to find solutions to the crisis of plastic pollution. Japan\u2019s support and expertise in waste management is incredibly vital to finding solutions to these problems,\u201d said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. \u00a0\u201cJapan has long been a committed and reliable partner to UNEP, and we are pleased to deepen this collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Japan\u2019s grant is intended to bolster the country\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofa.go.jp\/files\/000493728.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.mofa.go.jp\/files\/000493728.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1590595726621000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHpKDSZfzcWKc34oDvLu0tWIqvIIQ\">MARINE<\/a>\u00a0Initiative toward the realization of its Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, aimed at reducing additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050, which was announced at the G20 meeting in Osaka in 2019.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>How the Japanese grant will support Iraq and Sudan:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Part of the Japanese backing will also support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/iraq-debris-recycling-help-displaced-return-amidst-covid-19-outbreak-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/iraq-debris-recycling-help-displaced-return-amidst-covid-19-outbreak-risk&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1590595726621000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHwrs4LGPXsd2SWP1fgHYfGE7Wmsg\">conflict debris management<\/a>\u00a0in Iraq. This project will aim to aid returnees in Kirkuk Governorate by clearing their homes and providing livelihoods through debris recycling programs. The crushed debris will then be used in rehabilitation works.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A fourth project will help vulnerable farmers, pastoralists and internally displaced people build resilience to natural disasters under changing climatic conditions in South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This is not the first time that Japan offers support for addressing environmental issues. In 2019, Japan contributed $1.94 million to the Environment Fund. Japan has been keen to bolster the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/about-un-environment-programme\/funding-and-partnerships\/funding-facts\/environment-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/about-un-environment-programme\/funding-and-partnerships\/funding-facts\/environment-fund&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1590595726621000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFBbtOhrBAWvxI6MBbvdvq8MvT27Q\">Environment Fund<\/a>, the UNEP\u2019s core fund.
