{"id":55701,"date":"2020-05-20T00:18:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T22:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=55701"},"modified":"2020-05-20T00:18:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T22:18:49","slug":"eu-allocates-additional-e122-m-for-more-covid-19-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/eu-allocates-additional-e122-m-for-more-covid-19-research\/","title":{"rendered":"EU allocates additional \u20ac122 m for more COVID-19 research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The European Commission has allocated additional \u20ac122 million for urgently needed research into the coronavirus (COVID-19).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This falls within the framework of the commission&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_797\">\u20ac1.4 billion pledge<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global-response.europa.eu\/index_en\">Coronavirus Global Response<\/a>\u00a0initiative, launched by President Ursula\u00a0von der Leyen\u00a0on 4 May 2020.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This new special call under Horizon 2020 complements earlier actions to support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/news\/emergency-coronavirus-research-commission-selects-18th-project-develop-rapid-diagnostics-2020-mar-31_en\">18 projects<\/a>\u00a0with \u20ac48.2 million to develop diagnostics, treatments, vaccines and preparedness for epidemics, as well as the \u20ac117 million invested in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/files\/new-imi-research-projects-coronavirus_en\">8 projects<\/a>\u00a0on diagnostics and treatments through the Innovative Medicines Initiative, and measures to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/news\/additional-eu150-million-european-innovation-council-fund-breakthrough-ideas-tackling-coronavirus-2020-apr-30_en\">support innovative ideas<\/a>\u00a0through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research\/eic\/index.cfm\">European Innovation Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It implements Action 3 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/files\/first-eravscorona-action-plan-short-term-coordinated-research-and-innovation-actions_en\">ERAvsCorona<\/a>\u00a0Action Plan, a working document resulting from dialogues between the Commission services and national institutions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The new call will cover five areas, including repurposing of manufacturing for vital medical supplies and equipment (\u20ac23 million) as well as medical technologies, digital tools and artificial intelligence analytics to improve surveillance and care at high Technology Readiness Levels (\u20ac56 million).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It will also cover behavioral, social and economic impacts of the outbreak responses (\u20ac20 million) as well as pan-European COVID-19 cohorts (\u20ac20 million) and collaboration of existing EU and international cohorts of relevance to COVID-19 (\u20ac3 million).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The new call is the latest addition to a range of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/research-and-innovation\/research-area\/health-research-and-innovation\/coronavirus-research-and-innovation_en\">EU-funded research and innovation actions<\/a>\u00a0to fight the coronavirus. It complements earlier actions to develop diagnostics, treatments and vaccines by strengthening capacity to manufacture and deploying readily available solutions in order to rapidly address the pressing needs. It will also improve understanding of the behavioural and socio-economic impacts of the epidemic.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Mariya\u00a0Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:\u00a0<em>&#8220;<\/em>We are mobilizing all means at our disposal to fight this pandemic with testing, treatments and prevention. But to succeed against the coronavirus, we must also understand how it impacts our society and how to best deploy these interventions rapidly. We must explore technological solutions to manufacture medical equipment and supplies faster, to monitor and prevent the spread of the disease, and to better care for patients.<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Thierry\u00a0Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, added:\u00a0<em>&#8220;<\/em>We are supporting the health authorities, healthcare professionals and the general public in all Member States in tackling the coronavirus crisis. To this end, we are deploying innovative technologies and tools that can quickly\u00a0be used to\u00a0prevent, optimally treat,\u00a0and recover from this pandemic and prepare\u00a0for its aftermath.
