He hopes to have data and start developing the vaccines at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe are upscaling manufacturing, and we start producing in the late year with the aim to deliver 1 billion vaccines next year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cThis Week\u201d host\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/george-stephanopoulos\" data-nid=\"441503\">George Stephanopoulos<\/a><\/span>\u00a0asked Stoffels if it was \u201crealistic\u201d to hope for a vaccine to fight COVID-19 this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The scientific officer responded that clinical trials, that are necessary to show the vaccine works, \u201ctake some time.\u201d But he said a vaccine may be available this year, depending on if officials from the Food and Drug Administration rule the vaccine could be used before there is full data on its effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Stephanopoulos also asked Stoffels if the pandemic will pass without a vaccine,.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cWe are hoping it will,\u201d Stoffels responded, but added, \u201cwe don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cIt\u2019s now spreading around the world so fast and so significant that they will need a vaccine to control it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\" data-nid=\"261287\">President Trump<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/496876-positive-coronavirus-cases-shake-white-house\">questioned on Friday<\/a>\u00a0whether a vaccine would be necessary to stop the pandemic, saying \u201cat some point it will probably go away by itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 1.3 million people in the U.S., leading to at least 78,855 deaths, according to data from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/opsdashboard\/index.html#\/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6\">Johns Hopkins University<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Johnson &amp; Johnson executive said Sunday that the company\u2019s goal is to deliver 1 billion doses of coronavirus\u00a0vaccine next year.
