World leaders donated $8 billion during the Coronavirus Global Response pledging event organized by the European Commission. <\/span><\/p>\n

The European Commission pledged \u20ac1.4 billion out of the total sum. <\/span><\/p>\n

The event is meant to gather significant funding to ensure the collaborative development and universal deployment of\u00a0diagnostics, treatments\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>and\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>vaccines<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b>against coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pledging event was co-convened by the European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Italy (also incoming G20 presidency), Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (also holding the G20 presidency), Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom. <\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative is a response to the\u00a0call<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the World Health Organization (WHO) and a group of health actors for a global collaboration for the accelerated development, production and equitable global access to new coronavirus essential health technologies. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Coronavirus Global Response Initiative is comprised of\u00a0three partnerships<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0for testing, treating and preventing underpinned by health systems strengthening.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>EU commitment to responding to coronavirus: <\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

To help reach the objectives of the Coronavirus Global Response, the European Commission is committing \u20ac1 billion in grants and \u20ac400 million in guarantees on loans through reprioritization of\u00a0Horizon 2020<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(\u20ac1 billion),\u00a0RescEU<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(\u20ac80 million), the\u00a0Emergency Support Instrument<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(\u20ac150 million) and\u00a0external instruments<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(\u20ac170 million).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u20ac100 million will be donated to CEPI and \u20ac158 million to the World Health Organization. EU-funded calls for proposals and subsequent projects under Horizon 2020 will be aligned with the objectives of the three partnerships and subject to open access to data. Funding under RescEU will go towards the procurement, stockpiling and distribution of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donors are invited to continue pledging to the Coronavirus Global Response. They can choose which priority to donate to \u2013 Test, Treat or Prevent. They can also donate to the horizontal work stream of the Coronavirus Global Response, aiming to help health systems in the world cope with the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

President of the European Commission, Ursula\u00a0von der Leyen<\/span><\/strong>, said:\u00a0\u201cToday the world showed extraordinary unity for the common good. Governments and global health organizations joined forces against coronavirus. With such commitment, we are on track for developing, producing and deploying a vaccine for all. However, this is only the beginning. We need to sustain the effort and to stand ready to contribute more. The pledging marathon will continue. After governments, civil society and people worldwide need to join in, in a global mobilization of hope and resolve.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
