Chan School of Public Health,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/news\/italian-innovators-3d-printed-respirator-valves-save-lives-coronavirus-patients\/\">coronavirus patients<\/a>\u00a0exposed to high levels of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/news\/uber-under-fire-air-pollution\/\">air pollution<\/a>\u00a0were more likely to die from the virus than those patients in areas with cleaner air quality.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The scientists collected data from 3,000 counties, about 98% of the United States\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.iq.harvard.edu\/covid-pm\">population<\/a>\u00a0until April 4, 2020, and examined levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), an air quality indicator. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.iq.harvard.edu\/covid-pm\">study<\/a>\u00a0found that increases in long term exposure to PM 2.5 led to a large increase in the COVID-19 death rate. Ultimately,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.iq.harvard.edu\/covid-pm\">people<\/a>\u00a0in counties with high levels of pollution are 15% more likely to die from the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis study provides evidence that counties that have more polluted air will experience higher risks of death for Covid-19,\u201d Francesca Dominici, a professor of biostatistics at Harvard and lead author,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/07\/climate\/air-pollution-coronavirus-covid.html\">said<\/a>\u00a0of the study, meaning that counties with higher levels of pollution, \u201cwill be the ones that will have higher numbers of hospitalizations, higher numbers of deaths and where many of the resources should be concentrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\">Dr. John R.
