{"id":54775,"date":"2020-04-19T14:39:21","date_gmt":"2020-04-19T12:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=54775"},"modified":"2020-04-19T14:39:21","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T12:39:21","slug":"ukri-extends-14-1-m-for-5-oxford-covid-19-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/ukri-extends-14-1-m-for-5-oxford-covid-19-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"UKRI extends \u00a314.1 m for 5 Oxford COVID-19 projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Five Oxford University projects of the coronavirus will receive \u00a314.1 million as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mrc.ukri.org\/news\/browse\/20-million-rapid-response-for-novel-coronavirus-research\/\">\u00a324.6 million rapid research response funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI),<\/a>\u00a0and by the Department of Health and Social Care through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The five projects were selected among twenty-one new studies into the novel coronavirus which have been funded by the UK government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Twenty-one new studies into the novel coronavirus have been funded by the UK government, including the first clinical drug trial in primary care, vaccine and therapy development, and studying epidemiology, disease transmission, behavioral interventions and policy approaches to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">These projects build on the UK\u2019s world-class expertise and capability in global heath and infectious disease that has already shaped its understanding of the pandemic and is informing measures to tackle it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The projects support the UK government\u2019s efforts to save lives, protect the vulnerable and support the NHS so it can help those who need it the most.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">UK Research and Innovation Chief Executive, Professor Sir Mark Walport said: \u201cThe research community\u2019s response to the Covid-19 crisis has been outstanding. In a matter of weeks, researchers have formed projects to develop potential vaccines, repurpose existing drugs and explore the potential for new medicines, and to examine how the virus is transmitted and causes wide variation in symptoms. Pre-clinical trials of vaccines and clinical trials of drugs are already underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe pace at which this work has been carried out is tribute to the UK\u2019s world-class research base and its dedication to the fight against this disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The projects will run over a maximum 18-month period, ensuring timely insights into the current epidemic.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This research funding has been coordinated with other funders and the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure there is not duplication of effort and expertise is applied strategically.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">On 30 March, UKRI and NIHR\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/ukri-open-call-for-research-and-innovation-ideas-to-address-covid-19\/\">launched a joint rolling call\u00a0<\/a>for researchers to apply for funding for short-term projects addressing and mitigating the health, social, economic, cultural and environmental impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five Oxford University projects of the coronavirus will receive \u00a314.1 million as part of the\u00a0\u00a324.6 million rapid research response funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI),\u00a0and by the Department of Health and Social Care through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
