{"id":53075,"date":"2020-03-10T20:12:54","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T18:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=53075"},"modified":"2020-03-10T20:12:54","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T18:12:54","slug":"undp-uaes-diedc-partner-to-boost-islamic-economys-contribution-to-sdgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/undp-uaes-diedc-partner-to-boost-islamic-economys-contribution-to-sdgs\/","title":{"rendered":"UNDP, UAE&#8217;s DIEDC partner to boost Islamic economy&#8217;s contribution to SDGs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The Dubai Islamic Economy Development Center (DIEDC) joined hands with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to boost the Islamic economy&#8217;s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The two sides signed\u00a0a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to\u00a0focus on producing knowledge and research related to the Islamic economy and the SDGs, as well as on applying UNDP\u2019s SDG expertise in DIEDC initiatives across Islamic economy sectors and help DIEDC\u2019s stakeholders to align their activities with the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The agreement came in response to the UN Secretary-General\u2019s call-to-action on financing, including through the promotion of new partnerships to unlock Islamic finance for the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of DIEDC, said: \u201cDIEDC is driving the Islamic economy sectors\u2019 contribution to Dubai\u2019s economic diversification that testifies to the UAE\u2019s ability to achieve sustainable economic growth. Under the wise vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the supervision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai and General Supervisor of the Dubai: Capital of Islamic Economy initiative, we are committed to fulfilling the objectives of Dubai\u2019s Islamic economy strategy and creating an enabling environment for sustainable development and responsible investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">He added: \u201cThe world is witnessing a demand for sustainable and inclusive models of economic diversification, and this agreement underpins the UAE\u2019s role as a key player in the global Islamic economy domain that is growing steadily. Through boosting our ability to engage with stakeholders around the globe, this MoU empowers us to widen our horizons and maximize the potential of the Islamic economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Islamic economy and sustainability<\/h4>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The core principles of Islamic finance \u2013 channeling funding to the real economy, avoiding excessive speculations, and limiting debt to the value of assets \u2013 and Islamic social finance tools are highly aligned with the spirit of the SDGs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The Islamic Development Bank found Islamic Finance to be especially relevant in addressing 10 of the 17 SDGs, including goals pertaining to poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, financial stability and beyond.\u00a0Islamic finance encourages investors to create positive non-financial value alongside financial returns to support a socially conscious, environmentally friendly system. It also shares a broad understanding of the relationship between business and society, centered on advancing society&#8217;s wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cUNDP is proud to launch this new partnership with DIEDC, which will bridge development and finance partners to help accelerate progress towards the SDGs.\u00a0 Leveraging Islamic finance instruments will be vital to help protect the planet while ensuring shared economic prosperity, and we look forward to working together to translate those instruments into SDG-aligned investments and impact,\u201d said Marcos Neto, Director of UNDP\u2019s new SDG Finance Sector Hub.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cBy utilizing its global network and local knowledge base, UNDP is well placed to bring its development expertise to help DIEDC members\u2019 to leverage and measure the important contribution of the Islamic economy to the SDGs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Abdulla Mohammed Al Awar, CEO of DIEDC, said: \u201cWe welcome this landmark agreement to help advance our goal of establishing a robust Islamic economic system.
