Marshall University<\/a>. SURE grants offer undergraduate students at Marshall the opportunity for hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics research. The grants are made possible by the Research Challenge Fund, established by the West Virginia Legislature in 2004.<\/p>\nThe director of the program at Marshall is Dr. Michael Norton, a professor of chemistry in the College of Science. The $204,186 award will support the program for the next three years and each year provides 12 undergraduate students with fellowships that will allow them to work on research projects over the summer.<\/p>\n
Norton says the renewal of the grant is encouraging.<\/p>\n
“This renewal will enable us to support research by these undergraduate students for the next three summers, and that\u2019s significant in allowing our students to learn and do groundbreaking research right here in Marshall University labs.”<\/p>\n
The door is open for applying for SURE Program until February 28.<\/p>\n
About SURE Program:<\/h4>\n
The SURE program has supported student research at Marshall University since 2005.<\/p>\n
The SURE fellowship program is bankrolled by the West Virginia Research Challenge Fund that is administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, Division of Science and Research.<\/p>\n
This program is funded to encourage promising and enthusiastic young researchers from Marshall and other WV institutions to expand their experience in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n
By providing support in the form of a $4,000 stipend for a ten-week period, students can continue their research during the summer. The program seeks to encourage students who intend to pursue graduate degrees in the STEM fields.<\/p>\n
This program also allows them the opportunity to present their research in many venues.<\/p>\n
