{"id":50730,"date":"2020-01-22T14:13:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T12:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=50730"},"modified":"2020-01-22T14:13:46","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T12:13:46","slug":"mexicos-2020-intl-poster-biennial-contest-addresses-biodiversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/mexicos-2020-intl-poster-biennial-contest-addresses-biodiversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico\u2019s 2020 Int\u2019l Poster Biennial contest addresses biodiversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bienalcartel.org\/?lang=en\">International Poster Biennial<\/a> edition will be devoted this year to environmental issues, topped by biodiversity, which is the theme of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/colombia-host-2020-world-environment-day-biodiversity\">World Environment Day 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">In the spirit of harnessing the power of art to raise environmental awareness and inspire direct action, the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bienalcartel.org\/?lang=en\">International Poster Biennial<\/a>, has announced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bienalcartel.org\/16bicm\/\">call for entries<\/a>, inviting artists to submit posters under six categories, one of which is devoted to environmental issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The call for entries is open until 15 May 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">For the past 30 years, around 70,000 posters from five continents have been submitted to this exhibition, which takes place in Mexico City. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has partnered with the Biennial since 1990 to sponsor the environmental category.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\">How artists can support environmental issues:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Contemporary artists from all over the world have participated in the International Poster Biennial, using their tools and creativity to describe our planet\u2019s challenges in a way that feels relevant and urgent, and is often uncomfortable and difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">In the last edition of the contest, 1,645 posters were submitted to the environmental category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Some of the pressing environmental issues artists participating in the contest have addressed include, among others, biodiversity; plastic pollution; global warming; green economy and the reduction of food\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The Chinese designer Yongkang Fu won first place for his piece \u201cLiving Space\u201d, which powerfully evoked the harmful impact of plastic pollution on marine life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cThis year, the theme of the biennial is more relevant than ever, since we are experiencing irreversible biodiversity loss at an unprecedented scale,\u201d said Leo Heileman, UNEP regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cWe are very proud to continue this prolific partnership with the International Poster Biennial, taking place in Mexico City, one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in the Americas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cIt takes only three seconds for our brains to preserve the memory of a good poster,\u201d said Xavier Berm\u00fadez, Director of the Biennial since its foundation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cThe International Poster Biennial, in collaboration with UNEP, raises awareness and inspires individuals to take action by changing their lifestyles. It\u2019s not enough to show discomfort \u2013 a good poster should also motivate people to take positive action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cChange starts with awareness. Awareness that we are not alone on planet Earth. Awareness that all our decisions and actions have repercussions on other human beings, animals and plants,\u201d said Fatoumata Drav\u00e9, a Canadian designer who won second place at the Biennial in 2016. Her piece, titled \u201cToxicit\u00e9\u201d, dealt with the devastating consequences of aluminum\u00b4s production on marine life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been concerned with how graphic designers could have a say on social issues,\u201d she added. \u201cI seized the opportunity at the Biennial to make a research-based poster on biodiversity with a message that could potentially have an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\">2020 super year for environment:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The 2020 has been labeled as a \u2018super year\u2019 for the environment, one in which key international meetings are expected to set the agenda for environmental action over the next decade, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/seea.un.org\/events\/fifteenth-meeting-conference-parties-convention-biological-diversity\">15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity<\/a>, in Kunming, China, and the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. The COP15 will discuss the bold proposal of protecting 30 percent of all land and sea on the planet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2019\/05\/nature-decline-unprecedented-report\/\">One million species are at risk of extinction<\/a>\u00a0due to land and sea use change, pollution, climate change and overexploitation of resources, a landmark report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem (IPBES) reported in 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The health of the ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever, according to Sir Robert Watson, former Chair of IPBES, adding that human beings are eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The scale of the current biodiversity breakdown is unparalleled; the IPBES report warns that more than a third of all marine mammals, more than 40 percent of amphibian species and 10 percent of insects are threatened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mexico\u2019s International Poster Biennial edition will be devoted this year to environmental issues, topped by biodiversity, which is the theme of\u00a0World Environment Day 2020.
