{"id":50630,"date":"2020-01-20T15:52:50","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T13:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=50630"},"modified":"2020-01-20T15:52:50","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T13:52:50","slug":"who-urges-more-investments-in-developing-antibiotics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/who-urges-more-investments-in-developing-antibiotics\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO urges more investments in developing antibiotics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The World Health Organization (WHO) urged injecting more investments in developing antibiotics as declining private investment and lack of innovation in the development of new antibiotics are undermining efforts to combat drug-resistant infections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u00a0\u201cNever has the threat of antimicrobial resistance been more immediate and the need for solutions more urgent,\u201d Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cNumerous initiatives are underway to reduce resistance, but we also need countries and the pharmaceutical industry to step up and contribute with sustainable funding and innovative new medicines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The reports (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/330420\/9789240000193-eng.pdf\">Antibacterial agents in clinical development \u2013 an analysis of the antibacterial clinical development pipeline<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and its companion publication,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/330290\/WHO-EMP-IAU-2019.12-eng.pdf\">Antibacterial agents in preclinical development<\/a><\/em>) also found that research and development for antibiotics is primarily driven by small- or medium-sized enterprises with large pharmaceutical companies continuing to exit the field.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>Clinical development review:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">WHO in 2017 published the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/medicines\/areas\/rational_use\/prioritization-of-pathogens\/en\/\">priority pathogens list<\/a>, 12 classes of bacteria plus tuberculosis that are posing increasing risk to human health because they are resistant to most existing treatments.\u00a0 The list was developed by a WHO-led group of independent experts to encourage the medical research community to develop innovative treatments for these resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Of the 50 antibiotics in the pipeline, 32 target WHO priority pathogens but the majority have only limited benefits when compared to existing antibiotics. Two of these are active against the multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, which are spreading rapidly and require urgent solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to focus public and private investment on the development of treatments that are effective against the highly resistant bacteria because we are running out of options,\u201d says Hanan Balkhy, WHO Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we need to ensure that once we have these new treatments, they will be available to all who need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">On a more positive note, the pipeline for antibacterial agents to treat tuberculosis and\u00a0<em>Clostridium difficile<\/em>\u00a0(which causes diarrhea) is more promising, with more than half of the treatments fulfilling all the innovation criteria defined by WHO.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>WHO and its partners: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">New treatments alone will not be sufficient to combat the threat of antimicrobial resistance. WHO works with countries and partners to improve infection prevention and control and to foster appropriate use of existing and future antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">In the area of research and development, WHO and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi) have established the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP), a non-profit research and development organization accelerating the development of new and improved antibiotics to tackle drug-resistant infections. GARDP\u2019s strategy is to deliver five new treatments by 2025.
