A philanthropic businessman has donated $48 Million in aid to help combat the effects of the Australian wildfires. His contribution makes Andrew Forrest the single biggest donor in the relief efforts to date.<\/p>\n

Forrest is the founder and chair of the Minderoo Foundation \u2013 an Australian philanthropic organization.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Australia, the cause is near and dear to Forrest\u2019s heart. He has spent time on the ground with those affected, and on Tuesday, he shared those experiences with CBS12\u2019s Lexi Nahl.<\/p>\n

Today, the wildfires continue to tear through Australia — deadly smoke and flames devastating thousands of homes and leaving 28 people dead.<\/p>\n

There is still no end in sight to the crisis, so there is no telling just how severe the environmental impact will be, but the fires have already destroyed several parks, forests, and killed thousands of animals across the region.<\/div>\n

\u201cCertainly, I\u2019ve seen nothing like the furious danger of these fires,\u201d Forrest said in an interview with CBS12 News.<\/p>\n

Of his $48M donation, Forrest plans to reserve $10M for immediate emergency relief, including funding a volunteer army to help with first aid and crisis management among other things.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are putting the army together,\u201d Forrest said. \u201cWe have nearly 1,000 now, but we\u2019re reaching out across Australia and we need to mobilize them to where they\u2019re needed most.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forrest plans to put another $10M towards community rebuilding, and the remainder \u2013 the largest chunk of the donation \u2013 will go towards long term relief efforts to prevent future disasters like this one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
