{"id":46663,"date":"2019-11-19T20:23:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T18:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=46663"},"modified":"2019-11-19T20:29:56","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T18:29:56","slug":"who-au-to-cooperate-to-improve-health-well-being-in-africa-promote-universal-health-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/who-au-to-cooperate-to-improve-health-well-being-in-africa-promote-universal-health-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO, AU to cooperate to improve health, well-being in Africa, promote\u00a0universal health coverage\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"direction: ltr;\">The African Union (AU) Commission and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further bilateral cooperation, especially with regard to improving health and well-being of African people as well as giving momentum to universal health coverage.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The document was signed at WHO Headquarters by <a name=\"m_-5695925304468218390__Hlk24729559\"><\/a>Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the African Union Commission, and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">This significant commitment to global health follows the political declaration on universal health coverage (UHC), approved by all 193 UN Member States at the United Nations General Assembly in September, and the adoption of a global resolution to translate that political commitment into reality by legislators from 140 countries shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Under the memo, the two sides will collaborate in providing technical expertise to the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and creating an enabling environment to foster local production of medicines. Access to medicines that are high-quality, safe and effective is a core pillar of UHC. WHO welcomes the African Union\u2019s decision to endorse the treaty establishing the AMA and stands ready to provide high-quality technical expertise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The WHO and the AU Commission will also work on strengthening collaboration between the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and WHO, with a particular focus on emergency preparedness, to build AU Member States\u2019 defenses against epidemics and other health emergencies. WHO will also support efforts to strengthen the health workforce in AU countries, and to establish the African Volunteer Health Corps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The two sides will also support the implementation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/pt\/node\/35786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/au.int\/pt\/node\/35786&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574271303351000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGayrxXxLhluDT2rVGSGd0lWjfgDg\">Addis Ababa Call to Action on universal health coverage<\/a>\u00a0and the AU Declaration on Domestic Financing. Endorsed by the African Union Summit earlier this year, the Call to Action is a commitment by African Union countries to increase domestic investment in health, and to be accountable for that commitment. WHO will facilitate a dialogue between Health and Finance Ministers to help countries develop strong and sustainable health financing models.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The African Union plays a crucial role in supporting greater cohesion among AU Member States across a range of policy areas and programs.\u00a0 Through this Memorandum WHO aims to reinvigorate, expand, and deepen its relationship with the AU towards achievement of WHO\u2019s five-year strategy (the 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0General Program of Work, 2019-2023), and the health and development objectives of the African Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The MoU comes at a critical time in the drive towards universal health coverage.
