Electric mobility may be growing at a rapid pace around the world, but it could be some time before e-cars go mainstream, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n

Out of more than 5.1 million electric cars on the roads globally, nearly two million electric cars were sold in\u00a0China<\/a>, Europe and the U.S. last year. The International Energy Agency is aiming to increase the share of electric vehicles globally to 30% by 2030.<\/p>\n

\n
Chinese automakers Beijing Electric Vehicle and BYD<\/a>, US electric carmaker Tesla<\/a>\u00a0and Japan\u2019s\u00a0Nissan<\/a>\u00a0were the top producers. Together, they manufactured approximately 560,000 of the world\u2019s fully\u00a0<\/strong>electric cars.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Still, this number accounts for less than 1% of the one billion vehicles being driven today, according to statistics by BloombergNEF for the 2019 Electric Vehicle Outlook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Doling out incentives<\/h2>\n
\n

As greater importance is placed on reducing carbon emissions, more countries are providing incentives to build integrated infrastructure, and to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

Norway offers tax exemptions for electric car buyers \u2014 and 46% of automobiles in the country are electric. Shenzhen in China is one of the few cities equipped with a fleet of\u00a0fully electric buses<\/a>. Others like the US and India have set targets to aid their countries to stay on track toward a carbon emission-free vehicle industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn countries around the world, where there is an over-arching commitment towards the environment, the city has been more than willing to provide the charging infrastructure,\u201d Subodh Mhaisalkar, executive director for the Energy Research Institute at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, told CNBC.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just cars and buses becoming electric vehicles. Other modes of electric transportation, such as motorcycles, ships, and\u00a0tuk-tuks<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 or Thai rickshaws, are also popping up.<\/p>\n

However, we might still be a long way from reducing our carbon footprint, especially since 38% of the world\u2019s electricity still comes from burning coal.<\/p>\n

With more electric vehicles and charging stations being built, demand for electricity will also increase. According to projections by BloombergNEF, electric vehicles will cause global electricity consumption to rise 6.8% by 2040.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Challenges for electric carmakers<\/h2>\n

That\u2019s not the only dilemma in the industry.<\/p>\n

Harley-Davidson joins\u00a0a growing list of companies<\/a>\u00a0struggling to find a foothold.<\/p>\n

British appliance maker Dyson, known for household products like vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans,\u00a0called off its electric car project<\/a>\u00a0in October.<\/p>\n

Days later,\u00a0Harley-Davidson<\/a>\u00a0halted production of its fully electric motorcycle, known as the LiveWire. The decision came after a problem with its charging mechanism was discovered, barely a year after the motorcycle\u2019s debut.<\/p>\n

Still, financial and technological difficulties might make it difficult for these traditional companies to make their forays into the electric industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Future may be in the skies<\/h2>\n
\n

Despite such challenges, there are more and more entrants and improving technologies every day.<\/p>\n

The electric car market has paved the way for technological advancements in the skies as well.<\/p>\n

Volocopter<\/a>, in collaboration with helipad developer Skyports, aims to develop a commercial air taxi service in Singapore.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are absolutely convinced that it\u2019s going to be a meaningful way of moving around cities,\u201d Duncan Walker,\u00a0<\/strong>co-founder of Skyports told CNBC. \u201cWe see this very much as an integrated part of the transport network.\u201d<\/p>\n

Disrupting the multi-billion dollar auto industry will take time, but more and more countries are beginning to develop standard models for electric infrastructure.<\/p>\n
