{"id":43023,"date":"2019-09-23T19:13:44","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T17:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/?p=43023"},"modified":"2019-09-23T19:21:18","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T17:21:18","slug":"banks-with-47-trillion-in-assets-join-hands-for-climate-action-shift-from-brown-to-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/banks-with-47-trillion-in-assets-join-hands-for-climate-action-shift-from-brown-to-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks with $47 trillion in assets join hands for climate action, shift from \u201cbrown to green\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Banks collectively with more than $47 trillion in assets, or a third of the global industry, signed up to new United Nations-backed responsible banking principles in a massive boost for climate action and the shift from \u201cbrown to green\u201d models of economic growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unepfi.org\/banking\/bankingprinciples\/\">Principles<\/a>, launched one day ahead of the UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/\">Climate Action Summit<\/a>\u00a0in New York, banks commit to strategically align their business with the goals of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/what-is-the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a>\u00a0on Climate Change and the\u00a0UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>\u00a0(SDGs), and massively scale up their contribution to the achievement of both.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cThe UN Principles for Responsible Banking are a guide for the global banking industry to respond to, drive and benefit from a sustainable development economy,\u201d\u00a0UN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\">Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio\u00a0Guterres<\/a>\u00a0said at the launch event,\u00a0adding that they also \u201ccreate the accountability that can realize responsibility, and the ambition that can drive action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">By signing up to the Principles, banks said they\u00a0will among other goals, aim to\u00a0\u201cincrease our positive impacts, while reducing the negative impacts, and managing risks to people and the environment from our products and services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cHow you, as business leaders, respond can be a defining moment for our global goals.\u00a0Only public-private cooperation can\u00a0deliver sustainable development,\u201d Mr.\u00a0Guterres said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">He challenged\u00a0the 130 Founding Signatories and over 45 of their CEOs\u00a0gathered for the event\u00a0to not only align their business goals with the SDGs, the UN\u2019s blueprint for tackling poverty, protecting the environment and ensuring a fairer world for all, but also to\u00a0support gender equality, to invest in climate action and to disinvest from fossil fuels and pollution in general.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cWe will rely on you to scale up financing to businesses that stimulate green growth,\u201d the Secretary-general said, adding: \u201cPlace your bets on the green economy, not the grey economy, because the grey economy will have no future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Picking up that thread,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/people\/inger-andersen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inger Andersen<\/a>, Executive Director of the UN Environment Program (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/\">UNEP<\/a>), told the bankers:\u00a0\u201cWhen the financial system shifts its capital\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/130-banks-holding-usd-47-trillion-assets-commit-climate-action-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">away from resource-hungry, brown investments<\/a>\u00a0to those that back nature as solution, everybody wins in the long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The Principles were developed by a core group of 30 Founding Banks through an innovative global partnership between banks and the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">While action on climate change is growing, it is still far short of what is needed to meet the 1.5\u00b0C target of the\u00a0<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"The 2015 Paris Agreement\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paris Agreement<\/a>. Meanwhile, biodiversity continues to decline at alarming rates and pollution claims millions of lives each year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Against this background, UNEP says that more\u00a0ambition, backed by a step change in investment from the private sector, is needed to tackle these challenges and ensure that humanity lives in a way that ensures an equitable share of resources within planetary boundaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The banking and private sectors can benefit from the investment they put into backing this transition.
