{"id":41431,"date":"2019-08-22T20:42:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T18:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/?p=41431"},"modified":"2019-08-22T20:42:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T18:42:00","slug":"lack-of-clean-water-limits-economic-growth-by-one-third-wb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/lack-of-clean-water-limits-economic-growth-by-one-third-wb\/","title":{"rendered":"Lack of clean water limits economic growth by one-third &#8211; WB"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m-4061224564425935370\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" dir=\"ltr\">The World Bank said lack of clean water limits economic growth by one-third, calling for immediate global, national, and local-level attention to the dangers of what it termed as &#8220;invisible water quality crisis&#8221; which faces both developed and developing countries.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The world faces an invisible crisis of water quality that is eliminating one-third of potential economic growth in heavily polluted areas and threatening human and environmental well-being, according to a World Bank report.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cClean water is a key factor for economic growth. Deteriorating water quality is stalling economic growth, worsening health conditions, reducing food production, and exacerbating poverty in many countries.\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0World Bank Group President David Malpass.\u00a0\u201cTheir governments must take urgent actions to help tackle water pollution so that countries can grow faster in equitable and environmentally sustainable ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Biological Oxygen Demand \u2013 a measure of how much organic pollution is in water and a proxy measure of overall water quality \u2013 crosses a certain threshold, GDP growth in downstream regions drops by as much as a third because of impacts on health, agriculture, and ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>A key contributor to poor water quality is nitrogen, which, applied as fertilizer in agriculture, eventually enters rivers, lakes and oceans where it transforms into nitrates. Early exposure\u00a0of children\u00a0to nitrates affects their growth and brain development, impacting their health and adult earning potential. The run-off and release into water from every\u00a0additional kilogram of nitrogen fertilizer per hectare can increase the level of childhood stunting by as much as 19\u00a0percent\u00a0and\u00a0reduce future\u00a0adult earnings by as\u00a0much as 2\u00a0percent,\u00a0compared to those who are not exposed.<\/p>\n<p>The report also finds that as salinity in water and soil increases due to more intense droughts, storm surges and rising water extraction, agricultural yields fall.\u00a0 The world is losing enough food to saline water each year to feed 170 million people.<\/p>\n<p>The report recommends a set of actions that countries can take to improve water quality.
