{"id":40799,"date":"2019-08-05T10:49:12","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T08:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/?p=40799"},"modified":"2019-08-05T10:49:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T08:49:12","slug":"bentley-univ-research-underlines-companies-with-csr-record-have-insurance-against-negative-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/bentley-univ-research-underlines-companies-with-csr-record-have-insurance-against-negative-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Bentley Univ. research underlines companies with CSR record have \u201cinsurance\u201d against negative events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m3065142022660308032\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">A recent research by Bentley University professors Cynthia Clark and Jean Bedard\u00a0and co-author Andrew Stuart, a Suffolk University assistant professor\u00a0and former PhD Fellow at the\u00a0Harold S.Geneen Institute of Corporate Governance, underlined that\u00a0companies with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) record have \u201cinsurance\u201d against negative events.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The research said bad news travel fast, especially under social media updates, referring to Food-borne illness at Chipotle and General Mills, the emissions scandal at Volkswagen and United Airlines forcibly removing a passenger from an oversold flight. The research then raised a question\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;do companies with a track record of corporate social responsibility have \u201cinsurance\u201d against negative investor reactions to such events?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Corporate social responsibility describes an approach in which many companies operate in a way that\u2019s good for society and the\u00a0environment. This focus on corporate social responsibility, or \u201cCSR,\u201d can boost a company\u2019s image, particularly if the company goes through a negative event, as more consumers shift their loyalty and spending to companies they perceive as \u201cgood corporate citizens.\u201d Investors are paying attention, too, and as many companies voluntarily disclose their socially responsible practices, the research shows that this can help protect the companies against the bad publicity that a negative event can bring.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere is a switch in how investors use corporate social responsibility disclosure when a company has had a negative event,\u201d says Clark, a professor of Management\u00a0and director of the Geneen Institute.\u00a0\u201cOur findings suggest that when a company suffers a negative event, investors don\u2019t just look at future financial returns, but also consider the company\u2019s ethical culture when making investment decisions.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A second important finding of the research relates to the value of CSR\u00a0assurance\u00a0\u2014 an independent audit of a company\u2019s corporate\u00a0social responsibility efforts similar to the assurance that accounting firms provide on financial statements.
