Samy cited limited funding for scaling up research as a major obstacle, alongside investors’ reluctance to finance high-risk projects.

She said investors require proof of concept, including a tested pilot model, a marketable product, production cost estimates and an economic feasibility study, before committing funds.

Membranes show 95% dye removal efficiency:

Laboratory tests showed that the membranes removed around 95% of dyes from textile wastewater. The team then developed a prototype and tested it in an industrial setting, helping secure further funding.

The researchers later obtained EU funding to advance the technology, which uses sugarcane waste to manufacture filtration membranes for industrial wastewater treatment.

Further trials demonstrated around 90% filtration efficiency in treating a type of pharmaceutical industry waste, prompting the team to explore applications across other industrial waste streams.

The researchers are also developing multifunctional membranes for agricultural drainage water, with different types designed to remove fertilizers and separate other pollutants.

Samy said the research has attracted interest from companies seeking to collaborate with the team on developing reverse osmosis membranes for water purification and filtration, bringing the technology closer to industrial application.

Exploring plastic alternatives from agricultural waste:

Samy said the team is exploring the use of sugarcane waste to produce plastic alternatives, as global efforts to curb plastic use gather pace. However, the high cost of existing bio-based alternatives remains a barrier to wider commercial adoption.

The team is also developing a platform for packaging companies to test new materials at the university and assess their industrial suitability, helping startups bring products to market without shouldering testing and development costs alone.

Zero-waste model creates multiple revenue streams:

Samy said investors are increasingly interested in zero-waste models that extract multiple value-added products from a single agricultural crop instead of discarding unused residues.

She cited the potential to turn agricultural waste into filtration membranes, antioxidant materials and compounds used in bio-based adhesives, creating multiple revenue streams while reducing waste and production costs.

Such models offer investors the opportunity to generate greater value from a single raw material, particularly agricultural residues that require no additional acquisition costs.

The team is also developing experimental smart packaging solutions to improve product preservation, particularly for food, by assessing material properties and their suitability for different products.

Four in 10 research projects reach commercialization:

Assessing the transition of research projects into industry, Samy said around four in 10 research projects succeed in reaching commercial marketing, noting that some companies approach the team to improve and upgrade existing products. This reflects the progress of several innovations towards commercial application.

She added that Nile University provides an incubation system for startups to support researchers and entrepreneurs in moving their ideas from the research stage to the market.

The university’s commercialization rate compares with a global average of five to six out of every 10 research projects, she noted.

Irene Samy, Director of the Industrial Engineering Program and Smart Engineering Systems Center, Nile University, said her research team has developed filtration membranes using sugarcane waste that achieved around 95% efficiency in removing dyes from textile wastewater in laboratory tests, while exploring the use of the agricultural residue to produce plastic alternatives.
