The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU\u2019s financial markets regulator and supervisor, has published two thematic notes outlining good practices for communicating sustainability<\/a>-related claims, focusing on positive impact and climate transition claims.<\/p>\n

The notes aim to help market participants provide clear, fair and non-misleading information to investors and reduce the risk of greenwashing.<\/p>\n

Impact claims:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first note examines positive environmental and social impact claims made through funds and bonds. It highlights differences in how market participants define impact and set their ambitions, encouraging them to clearly explain the changes they expect to achieve, how they intend to generate positive impact and how results will be measured.<\/p>\n

Climate transition claims:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second note examines climate transition claims across funds, bonds and benchmarks, drawing on observed market practices. Given the forward-looking nature of these claims and the uncertainties surrounding their achievement, ESMA stresses the importance of explaining transition objectives, implementation plans and methods for assessing and communicating progress.<\/p>\n

The note also highlights the need to disclose relevant assumptions, data limitations and dependencies that could affect the achievement of stated objectives.<\/p>\n

Guidance, not new regulatory requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The thematic notes provide practical do\u2019s and don\u2019ts, supported by examples of good and poor practices observed in the market. They form part of ESMA\u2019s broader efforts to improve transparency and consistency in sustainability-related communications, following earlier guidance on ESG credentials and ESG strategies.<\/p>\n

ESMA clarified that the notes do not introduce new regulatory requirements or prescribe a specific approach or level of ambition, including in the context of the ongoing review of the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR).<\/p>\n
