{"id":121691,"date":"2026-10-15T12:55:16","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T09:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/?p=121691"},"modified":"2026-10-15T13:25:42","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T10:25:42","slug":"egypt-first-globally-to-maintain-gold-tier-for-hepatitis-c-elimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/egypt-first-globally-to-maintain-gold-tier-for-hepatitis-c-elimination\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt first globally to maintain Gold Tier for hepatitis C elimination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/e10-m-eib-who-grant-to-boost-health-resilience-in-lebanon\/\"> World Health Organization (WHO<\/a>) has officially validated Egypt\u2019s maintenance of its Gold Tier status on the path to hepatitis C elimination, making it the first country in the world to receive this recognition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The validation follows an assessment covering 2023\u20132025 and an endorsement by the WHO Regional Validation Committee on HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections in July 2026.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Sustaining progress toward elimination:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Egypt achieved WHO Gold Tier status in 2023 after reducing hepatitis C prevalence from around 10% to less than 0.38% in just over a decade, meeting the organization\u2019s validation criteria for progress toward elimination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maintaining this status reflects the Ministry of Health and Population\u2019s continued efforts to sustain effective prevention, testing, treatment and follow-up services, while strengthening surveillance and health systems to prevent a resurgence of the disease.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Building on nationwide screening campaign:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Egypt\u2019s achievement builds on the <em>100 Million Seha<\/em> (Healthy Lives) campaign, which screened more than 60 million people and provided hepatitis C treatment to more than 4.5 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The campaign demonstrated the impact of high-level political commitment and a whole-of-government approach to nationwide screening and accessible treatment, supported by locally produced direct-acting antiviral medicines.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Integrating hepatitis services into healthcare:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">During the maintenance period, Egypt shifted from large-scale, campaign-based screening toward a sustainable approach integrated into the national health system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Key achievements include the continued expansion of hepatitis C screening, diagnosis and treatment; stronger governance under the 2025\u20132030 National Sustainability Plan for Viral Hepatitis; and the ongoing integration of hepatitis services into primary healthcare and the universal health insurance system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Egypt has also strengthened laboratory quality systems and disease surveillance while maintaining high safety standards for blood supplies and injections.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">WHO supports Egypt\u2019s hepatitis response:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">WHO has worked with Egypt throughout its hepatitis C response, providing technical guidance and support to strengthen prevention, testing, treatment and surveillance, and helping translate global evidence and guidelines into action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The country\u2019s sustained efforts have protected millions of people from infection, helped safeguard families from the loss of loved ones and created opportunities for future generations to lead healthier lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially validated Egypt\u2019s maintenance of its Gold Tier status on the path to hepatitis C elimination, making it the first country in the world to receive this recognition.
