{"id":121264,"date":"2026-10-09T22:53:51","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T19:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/?p=121264"},"modified":"2026-10-09T22:53:51","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T19:53:51","slug":"businesses-financial-institutions-urge-reform-of-2-6trln-in-incentives-damaging-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/businesses-financial-institutions-urge-reform-of-2-6trln-in-incentives-damaging-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses, financial institutions urge reform of $2.6trln in incentives damaging nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">More than 130 businesses and financial institutions have called on governments to accelerate reforms of fiscal and financial incentives that distort markets and undermine long-term economic and supply chain resilience, ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/conferences\/2026\">UN Biodiversity COP17<\/a> in Yerevan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The open letter, coordinated by Business for Nature and the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation, describes incentive reform as one of the most powerful economic levers available to governments to de-risk global supply chains and unlock private investment at scale.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>$2.6trln in public spending:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At least $2.6 trillion in public spending annually \u2014 equivalent to nearly 2.5% of global GDP \u2014 currently supports practices that deplete the soils, water and ecosystems underpinning global trade, according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The signatories are urging governments to launch collaborative national reform processes within 12 months to align public spending with long-term economic resilience and ensure sustainable and resilient production becomes the more competitive choice for businesses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Under Target 18 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, 196 countries committed to identify and reform nature-harmful incentives by 2025 and reduce them by at least $500 billion annually by 2030. However, only 5% have so far established comprehensive national targets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Businesses call for cross-sector reform:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">With COP17 set to assess progress on the global biodiversity framework, the signatories are calling for reform processes that involve businesses, financial institutions, producers, civil society, local communities and Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Specifically, they are urging governments to:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Align public policy and spending to reward practices that conserve vital resources and make resilient production more competitive.<\/li>\n<li>Establish cross-ministerial national platforms to develop reform plans with relevant stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure reform plans are economically effective and socially equitable while supporting local communities, farmers and Indigenous Peoples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>$600bln in revenue, $4.7trln in assets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The signatories, which include Aldi Sued, BNP Paribas Asset Management, Danone, Decathlon, Federated Hermes Limited, <a href=\"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/hm-cherishes-sustainability-in-2023\/\">H&amp;M<\/a> Group, Legal &amp; General, L&#8217;Occitane en Provence, Mahindra Group, Rabobank, Triodos Bank and Unilever, collectively represent more than $600 billion in company revenues and $4.7 trillion in assets under management.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Other signatories include Arcadis, Bel Group, Danske Bank, Natura, Nestl\u00e9, \u00d8rsted, Storebrand Asset Management, Tetra Pak and Vattenfall.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The businesses and financial institutions also said they are taking steps to support incentive reform by assessing and disclosing their dependencies and impacts on nature, incorporating resource security into their strategies, and providing policymakers with insights to develop practical and credible reform plans.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Call comes ahead of COP17, G20 meetings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The letter comes as governments and businesses prepare to gather at the UN Biodiversity COP17 in Yerevan and ahead of the G20, IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, providing opportunities to build momentum for national action on incentive reform.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature, said public finance already shapes economic activity and that changing what it rewards is among the most powerful tools governments have to protect the resources on which businesses, economies and societies depend.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Anita de Horde, Co-Founding Executive Director of the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation, said governments need to reform harmful subsidies and introduce positive incentives for nature to redirect financial flows and enable private investment at scale.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 130 businesses and financial institutions have called on governments to accelerate reforms of fiscal and financial incentives that distort markets and undermine long-term economic and supply chain resilience, ahead of the UN Biodiversity COP17 in Yerevan.
