Europe\u2019s largest industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility was officially inaugurated at Yara\u2019s Sluiskil plant in the Netherlands, establishing the first complete cross-border value chain for capturing, transporting and permanently storing CO\u2082.<\/p>\n

The inauguration was attended by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, and Yara International President and CEO Svein Tore Holsether.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important day for Yara and for European industry. The carbon capture facility in Sluiskil proves that large-scale industrial decarbonization is possible today,\u201d Holsether said.<\/p>\n

800,000 Tons of CO\u2082 annually:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yara Sluiskil, Europe\u2019s largest ammonia and fertilizer plant, can capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tons of CO\u2082 annually from ammonia production, helping the company avoid carbon taxation on the captured volumes.<\/p>\n

The liquefied CO\u2082 will be transported by ship to Norway, where Northern Lights will permanently store it 2,600 meters beneath the seabed.<\/p>\n

With the right framework conditions in place, the project is expected to capture and store around 12 million tons of CO\u2082 over the next 15 years, contributing to European climate goals and industrial decarbonization<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Supporting industrial competitiveness<\/strong><\/p>\n

CCS is considered a key tool for reducing emissions from energy-intensive industries while maintaining production, jobs and value creation in Europe.<\/p>\n

The technology can help industries including fertilizers, ammonia, cement and waste management cut emissions that are difficult to eliminate through other measures.<\/p>\n

\u201cEurope needs practical climate solutions that deliver real emissions reductions while strengthening industrial competitiveness,\u201d Hoekstra said, adding that the Sluiskil project demonstrates what can be achieved through innovation and cross-border cooperation.<\/p>\n

Cross-border CO\u2082 transport, storage:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project connects CO\u2082 capture at Yara Sluiskil with maritime transport and permanent storage in Norway. Northern Lights vessels will transport the liquefied CO\u2082 to \u00d8ygarden, where it will be stored 2,600 meters below the seabed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a milestone we have been looking forward to,\u201d said Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights. \u201cTogether, we are demonstrating that capture and cross-border CO\u2082 transport and storage is a viable solution for European industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heijn said the project also marks an important step in developing Europe\u2019s carbon management market and the infrastructure needed for the region\u2019s industrial transition.<\/p>\n

Driving low-carbon products:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CCS project will enable Yara to further reduce the carbon footprint of its production and support lower-carbon value chains across agriculture, industry, energy and shipping.<\/p>\n

These include low-carbon fertilizers for more sustainable food production, low-carbon ammonia for industrial applications and clean-energy solutions, and low-carbon fuels for the maritime sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
