Packaging must also be designed to be reusable or recoverable, meaning it can be reused or processed into new materials after use.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Single-use packaging faces new restrictions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">From 2030, certain types of single-use packaging will be banned where more <a href=\"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/brazil-unep-launch-new-initiative-for-sustainable-cooling-italy-earmarks-eur-2-m-for-global-cooling-pledge\/\">sustainable<\/a> alternatives are available.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The restrictions will cover items such as small single-use ketchup packets and miniature shampoo bottles used in hotels.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The measures aim to make packaging less wasteful, more recyclable, easier to reuse and safer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Plastic packaging to include more recycled content:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Plastic packaging will have to contain recycled material, with targets increasing through 2030 and 2040.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">By 2030, all packaging must also be recyclable, allowing its components to be collected and used in new products.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Clear labels and color coding will make it easier for consumers to identify packaging materials, determine how to dispose of them and understand where packaging can be returned for reuse.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>EU targets unnecessary packaging and empty space:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The new rules will also seek to reduce unnecessary packaging and excessive empty space in deliveries.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Deposit-return systems will be strengthened, while companies will be required to provide reuse or refill options where possible and without additional charges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Businesses using non-recyclable or environmentally harmful materials will also face responsibility for the costs of cleaning up related waste.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>PFAS restrictions target harmful chemicals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The rules will restrict the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d in food packaging because of their potential health and environmental risks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The measures form part of the EU\u2019s broader push toward a more circular, sustainable and competitive economy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The EU said the new packaging law will harmonize requirements across the single market while creating opportunities for companies involved in recycling, reuse and sustainable packaging solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New European Union (EU) rules on packaging and packaging waste took effect on August 12, introducing requirements designed to reduce waste, protect public health and create new opportunities for businesses in recycling and sustainable packaging.
