Every $1 invested in preparing for El Ni\u00f1o could save $3\u2013$7 in future losses and response costs, according to the World Food Program (WFP), as the climate phenomenon threatens to push 49 million more people into acute food insecurity.<\/p>\n
The number of acutely food-insecure people across 45 vulnerable countries could rise from 225 million to 274 million, an increase of around 22%, as El Ni\u00f1o affects rainfall, temperatures, floods and droughts.<\/p>\n
\u201cEl Ni\u00f1o is a massive threat to the food security of millions who are already vulnerable,\u201d said Carl Skau, WFP\u2019s Acting Executive Director. \u201cThe sooner we help families to prepare for these climate shocks, the greater our ability to save lives and protect livelihoods.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Who\u2019s most exposed:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Central America and southern Africa are expected to face some of the sharpest impacts, with significant risks also forecast across eastern Africa and South and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
\n
- Central America:<\/strong> Acute food insecurity could rise by 83.1%, the largest proportional increase among the regions analyzed.<\/li>\n
- East and Southern Africa:<\/strong> More than 18 million people could see their food security deteriorate, a 26% increase.<\/li>\n
- Latin America and the Caribbean:<\/strong> More than 16 million people could be affected.<\/li>\n
- Asia and the Pacific:<\/strong> Around 8.2 million additional people could face acute food insecurity.<\/li>\n
- West and Central Africa:<\/strong> Food insecurity could rise by 12%, affecting nearly 6 million additional people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Southern African countries are particularly exposed because many households depend on rain-fed subsistence agriculture.<\/p>\n
A repeat of 2015-16?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
The 2015-16 El Ni\u00f1o affected the food security of an estimated 60 million to 100 million people.<\/p>\n
WFP expects the 2026-27 El Ni\u00f1o to peak between September and December 2026, with its effects potentially extending through 2027 as droughts, flooding and extreme temperatures hit future planting seasons and harvests.<\/p>\n
Early action is already underway:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
WFP is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/a>, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)<\/a> and other partners on prevention plans in more than 50 countries.<\/p>\n
Since May, WFP has activated anticipatory action plans in South Sudan, Chad, Mauritania, Uganda, Guatemala and El Salvador, providing more than $14 million in lifesaving support to around 500,000 people.<\/p>\n
The agency is also expanding pre-arranged financing mechanisms, including disaster-risk insurance, credit and digital payments, to make funding available faster and at lower cost.<\/p>\n
The approach is designed to help governments and communities withstand climate shocks while reducing future humanitarian needs.
