DP World has helped customers cut more than 160,000 tons of CO2e emissions<\/a> from UK supply chains in less than three years, driven by a combination of expanded rail freight, lower-carbon trucking solutions and carbon inset programs.<\/p>\n

Rail freight delivers biggest impact:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The company’s Modal Shift Program, launched in September 2023, has been a key driver of the emissions reductions. The initiative increased rail’s share of freight at DP World’s Southampton terminal from 21% to more than 30%, shifting more than 200,000 truck journeys from road to rail and significantly lowering transport emissions.<\/p>\n

Low-carbon trucking scales up:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

DP World has also expanded cleaner road freight through its Low Carbon Truck Program (LCTP). More than 1,500 trucks have joined the initiative, enabling hauliers serving London Gateway and Southampton to switch from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) at no additional cost during the program’s first phase.<\/p>\n

The second phase introduces the Electric Vehicle Introduction and Transition Accelerator (EVITA) trial at Southampton, allowing operators to test electric heavy goods vehicles in real-world conditions for 12 weeks while matching diesel operating costs.<\/p>\n

Carbon Inset Program gains traction:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since launching in January 2025, DP World’s Carbon Inset Program (CIP)<\/a> has registered more than 250,000 TEUs of cargo. The company has also increased available carbon credits fivefold\u2014from 50kg to 250kg of CO2e per container\u2014to help customers accelerate supply chain decarbonisation.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, DP World introduced Container Terminal Inset Certificates, allowing customers to claim verified emissions reductions generated through terminal electrification, renewable electricity and lower-carbon fuels toward their own climate targets.<\/p>\n

Supporting scope 3 reductions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The combined initiatives are helping businesses reduce Scope 3 emissions without compromising supply chain efficiency, resilience or competitiveness.<\/p>\n

John Trenchard, Vice President \u2013 Sustainable Supply Chains at DP World, said the milestone demonstrates how collaboration across ports, logistics providers and customers can accelerate supply chain decarbonization at scale through rail, lower-carbon fuels, electrification and carbon inset solutions.<\/p>\n
