{"id":106134,"date":"2025-01-19T10:56:28","date_gmt":"2025-01-19T08:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=106134"},"modified":"2025-01-19T10:56:28","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T08:56:28","slug":"49-of-ebrds-record-investment-in-egypt-five-other-semed-states-was-in-green-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/49-of-ebrds-record-investment-in-egypt-five-other-semed-states-was-in-green-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"49% of EBRD\u2019s record investment in Egypt, five other SEMED states was in green economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Egypt primary recipient of EBRD investments in SEMED with the bank\u2019s commitment of almost \u20ac1.5 bn to 26 out of its 50 new projects in Egypt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">About 49% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/ebrd-allocates-275-m-syndicated-loan-for-egypts-suez-wind-farm\/\">European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)<\/a>\u2019s record investment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/the-EBRD-and-the-SEMED.html\">southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEMED)<\/a> region went to green economy in 2024, with 55 percent in the financial sector, 25\u202fpercent in the corporate sector and 21 percent in sustainable infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Across the six economies of the SEMED region (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and the West Bank and Gaza), EBRD posted record investment of more than \u20ac2.4\u202fbillion in 2024 \u2013 up from \u20ac2 billion in 2023 \u2013 in extremely challenging times.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Nearly 60 percent of all investment in the region included targeted actions aimed at strengthening gender equality, with figures of 75 percent in Jordan, 58 percent in Egypt, 56 percent in Tunisia and 50 percent in Morocco. In addition, 33 percent of all projects across the region had an explicit focus on addressing inequalities and developing human capital.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>\u202fwas the primary recipient of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) 2024 investment in the\u202f SEMED region, with new commitments to 26 projects totaling almost \u20ac1.5 billion, of which 98 per cent were in the private sector and 50 per cent in green financing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bank\u2019s cumulative investments in Egypt since the start of its operations in 2012 reached \u20ac13.8 billion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2024\/arab-african-international-bank-ifc-ebrd-and-bii-launch-us500-million-sustainability-bond.html#:~:text=The%20sustainability%20bond%20will%20help,growing%20financing%20needs%20for%20MSMEs.\">The Bank invested $\u202f100 million in the inaugural $\u202f500 million sustainability bond<\/a>\u00a0issued by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaib.com\/\">Arab African International Bank\u202f<\/a>(AAIB), paving the way for more such issuances and setting a benchmark for others. Seventy-five percent of the bond\u2019s proceeds will be allocated to green financing to increase industrial energy-efficiency and support small-scale renewable energy projects and green buildings, while 25 percent will be allocated to promoting social goals, through inclusive financing and support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Under Egypt\u2019s Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE), the Bank arranged a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2024\/ebrd-supports-the-largest-onshore-wind-project-in-africa.html\">syndicated loan worth $ 275 million to Suez Wind<\/a>\u00a0for the construction and operation of one of the largest wind farms in Africa. The wind farm in the Gulf of Suez region will have an installed capacity of 1.1 GW and will provide clean, renewable power at a lower cost than conventional generation methods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The EBRD also continued to promote the digital transition in\u202fEgypt\u202fthrough an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2024\/ebrd-promotes-digital-transition-in-egypt.html\">equity investment in Paymob<\/a> as part of a $ 22 million financing round.\u202fThe investment comes under the Bank\u2019s Venture Capital Investment Program, which supports early- and growth-stage technology companies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">To foster a more inclusive economy in Egypt, around 60 percent of the Bank\u2019s 2024 investments incorporated a focus on women\u2019s economic empowerment. More than one-third of projects supported initiatives that explicitly address inequality while strengthening workforce capacity.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Under the EBRD\u2019s Advice for Small Businesses, supported by the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/who-we-are\/structure-and-management\/shareholders\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a>\u202f(EU), more than 700 small Egyptian enterprises received advisory services and training last year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2024, the Bank made more than \u20ac2.4 billion of new investments in 50 projects across the SEMED region, 85 percent of them in the private sector.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The region also continued to benefit from strong donor support, including from the\u202fEU, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/who-we-are\/our-donors\/multi-donor-funds.html#semed\">EBRD SEMED Multi-Donor Account<\/a>, the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenclimate.fund\/home\">Green Climate Fund<\/a>, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/globalcff.org\/\">Global Concessional Financing Facility<\/a>\u202fand other donors.<\/p>\n<p
