{"id":105281,"date":"2024-12-24T14:11:46","date_gmt":"2024-12-24T12:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=105281"},"modified":"2024-12-24T14:11:46","modified_gmt":"2024-12-24T12:11:46","slug":"unep-partners-launch-pilot-project-to-build-flood-resilient-homes-in-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/unep-partners-launch-pilot-project-to-build-flood-resilient-homes-in-bangladesh\/","title":{"rendered":"UNEP, partners launch pilot project to build flood-resilient homes in Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/sekem-initiative-in-egypt-among-six-winners-of-uneps-2024-champions-of-earth\/\"> United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)<\/a> and several partners launched a pilot project to build flood-resilient homes across Bangladesh to help communities cope with water-related disasters.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">So far, the effort \u2013 also supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unepccc.org\/\">UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre<\/a>\u00a0and BRAC, an international development organization \u2013 has built 37 residences.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The house \u2013 which cost around $12,000 \u2013 is designed to withstand cyclone-force winds and is built on an elevated platform to protect it from flooding. It has rainwater harvesting systems to provide safe drinking water, rooftop solar panels to supply electricity and an indoor livestock pen. The house even doubles as an emergency shelter capable of accommodating up to 40 people.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;When the roads are flooded or blocked, these shelters are close to where people live, so they don\u2019t have to risk traveling miles with elderly relatives, young children, or livestock,&#8221; said Muhammad Liakath Ali, the Director of Climate Change with BRAC.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In a country where more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/results\/2022\/08\/29\/shelter-from-the-storm-protecting-bangladesh-s-coastal-communities-from-natural-disasters\">7,000 cyclone shelters are estimated to be needed by 2025<\/a>, these types of homes are essential, said Mirey Atallah, Chief of UNEP\u2019s Adaptation and Resilience Branch, UNEP.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cFor Bangladesh and many other developing countries, climate change is not some future threat \u2013 it is here, now,\u201d she says. \u201cThe world needs to massively step up how it\u2019s adapting to this challenge if we\u2019re going to protect decades of hard-won development gains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">According to UNEP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/adaptation-gap-report-2024\">Adaptation Gap Report 2024<\/a>, the developing world only has access to a fraction of the funding it needs to adapt to climate change, which has been linked to everything from heatwaves, to rising seas to more frequent and more intense storms. At the recently concluded UN Climate Change Summit in Azerbaijan, countries agreed to channel up US$300 billion a year to developing nations to help them adapt with climate change.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cSometimes the arguments about climate finance can seem quite abstract,\u201d Atallah said. \u201cBut what that finance means is more of these climate-resilient houses can be built, protecting locals and building their resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Nearly 190 people live currently in the storm-resistant houses.
