{"id":103182,"date":"2024-10-28T20:32:59","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=103182"},"modified":"2024-10-28T20:33:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:33:02","slug":"study-atlantic-ocean-absorbs-about-7-more-co%e2%82%82-each-year-than-previously-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/study-atlantic-ocean-absorbs-about-7-more-co%e2%82%82-each-year-than-previously-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Atlantic Ocean absorbs about 7% more CO\u2082 each year than previously thought"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A recent study\u00a0\u2013 led by researchers from the University of Exeter\u2019s Penryn Campus in Cornwall \u2013\u00a0found out that the Atlantic Ocean absorbs about 7% more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/climate-action-in-cities-can-offer-third-more-jobs\/\">carbon dioxide (CO\u2082)<\/a> each year than previously thought as subtle temperature differences at the ocean surface allow more to be absorbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It might sound small, but when applied across all oceans this additional carbon absorption is equivalent to one and half times the carbon captured by annual forest growth in the Amazon rainforest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Scientists have thought that the ocean skin \u2013 a 0.01 mm sliver of surface water, thinner than a human hair, which is typically fractionally cooler than the water below \u2013 should increase the amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is because cooler waters are more efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide. The gas concentration between this layer and the water some 2 mm deeper is what controls the exchange of the gas between the atmosphere and the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Theoretical and lab work have suggested this temperature difference should increase the amount of CO\u2082 absorbed by the ocean \u2013 but this had never been successfully observed at sea before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The study used precision measurements to confirm that the temperature of the ocean skin does indeed aid carbon absorption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe global ocean absorbs about a quarter of humanity\u2019s carbon emissions, slowing climate change whilst also harming the ocean, and the new findings help improve our understanding of these processes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOur findings provide measurements that confirm our theoretical understanding about CO\u2082 fluxes at the ocean surface,\u201d said lead author Dr Daniel Ford, from the University of Exeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWith the COP29 climate change conference taking place next month, this work highlights the importance of the oceans, but it should also help us improve the global carbon assessments that are used to guide emission reductions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And the team has now included this advancement within their data submission to this year\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalcarbonbudget.org\/\">Global Carbon Budget<\/a>&nbsp;assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The ship observations \u2013 from two European Space Agency projects \u2013 were taken by a CO\u2082 flux systems that measured tiny differences in CO\u2082 in air swirling towards the ocean surface and away again, along with high-resolution temperature measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Until now, global estimates of air-sea CO\u2082 fluxes typically ignore the importance of temperature differences in the near-surface layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr Ian Ashton, also from the University of Exeter, said: \u201cThis work is the culmination of many years of effort from an international team of scientists. The European Space Agency\u2019s support for science was instrumental in putting together such a high-quality measurement campaign across an entire ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr Gavin Tilstone, from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), said: \u201cThis discovery highlights the intricacy of the ocean\u2019s water column structure and how it can influence CO\u2082 draw-down from the atmosphere. Understanding these subtle mechanisms is crucial as we continue to refine our climate models and predictions.
