{"id":102457,"date":"2024-10-09T20:14:37","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=102457"},"modified":"2024-10-09T20:14:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:14:40","slug":"study-surveyed-climate-experts-believe-world-may-achieve-net-zero-emissions-by-2100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/study-surveyed-climate-experts-believe-world-may-achieve-net-zero-emissions-by-2100\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Surveyed climate experts believe\u00a0world may achieve net-zero emissions by 2100"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A study &#8211; based on a survey of more than 200 authors of reports from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0(IPCC) \u2013 said more than two-thirds of surveyed respondents believe\u00a0the world may achieve\u00a0net-zero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/barclays-discounted-interest-rate-of-green-loans-for-business-to-help-cut-emissions\/\">emissions <\/a>of carbon dioxide during the second half of this century, according to Stanford University.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This indicates some optimism that mitigation efforts may be starting to bend the emissions curve toward what would be needed to achieve the Paris Agreement&#8217;s temperature goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese experts\u2019 answers are consistent with the success and further strengthening of current climate policies, which may be encouraging to those concerned about the negative impacts of climate change that we\u2019re already seeing,\u201d said study co-author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/steve-davis\">Steve Davis<\/a>, a professor of Earth system science at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainability.stanford.edu\/\">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A majority of survey respondents also&nbsp;acknowledged&nbsp;the potential for removing carbon dioxide from Earth\u2019s atmosphere, with a median response indicating belief that the technology could remove up to five gigatons of carbon dioxide annually by 2050. That is at the lower end of the range believed to be necessary to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement\u2019s goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and preferably below 1.5 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe wanted to survey some of the top climate experts in the world to get some insight into their perceptions of different future climate outcomes,\u201d said lead study author Seth Wynes, an assistant professor of geography and environmental management at the University of Waterloo. \u201cThese scientists also engage in important climate change communication, so their optimism or pessimism can affect how decision-makers are receiving messages about climate change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 211 survey respondents were generally pessimistic about the likelihood of reaching the Paris targets given current policies, with 86% estimating warming above 2 degrees Celsius by 2100. The median estimate was 2.7 degrees Celsius, which is expected to have catastrophic consequences for people and the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Co-author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordia.ca\/faculty\/damon-matthews.html\">Damon Matthews<\/a>, a professor in Concordia University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordia.ca\/artsci\/geography-planning-environment.html\">Department of Geography, Planning and Environment<\/a>, noted that this does not mean such extreme warming is inevitable.&nbsp; \u201cThese responses are not a prediction of future warming, but rather a gauge of what the scientific community believes. The answers are surprisingly consistent with previous estimates of what would happen if our current climate policies continued without any increase in ambition, which range from about 2.5 to 3 C,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Along with questions about the likelihood of future climate outcomes, the respondents were also asked to estimate their peers\u2019 responses to the same questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere was a strong correlation between what people believe and what they sense their peers believe,\u201d Wynes said. \u201cThey had a bias to see their beliefs as representative of the larger group. This can indicate an overconfidence in their own beliefs, so we think this is a good opportunity for them to reevaluate what their peers actually
