{"id":101617,"date":"2024-09-19T15:56:20","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T12:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=101617"},"modified":"2024-09-19T15:56:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T12:56:22","slug":"wmo-full-recovery-of-ozone-layer-by-2040-2045","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/wmo-full-recovery-of-ozone-layer-by-2040-2045\/","title":{"rendered":"WMO: Full recovery of Ozone Layer by 2040-2045"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A new bulletin by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/wmo-ghg-levels-surface-temperatures-break-records-in-2023\/\">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/a> expected full recovery of the Ozone Layer \u00a0by 2045 over the Arctic and 2040 for the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Ozone and UV Bulletin&#8217;s release coincides with the World Ozone Day which celebrates the implementation of the Montreal Protocol and the later amendment to the pact, known as the Kigali Agreement. That key international agreement saw an end to the production of \u201cdamaging ozone-depleting substances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Noting that the ozone layer is on the road to recovery, the UN Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, said further protection measures are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe Protocol\u2019s Kigali Amendment, which focuses on phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) \u2013 powerful climate-warming gases \u2013 can contribute to advancing climate mitigation efforts, protecting people and planet,\u201d the Secretary-General said. \u201cAnd&nbsp;<strong>that is needed more than ever, as temperature records continue to shatter<\/strong><strong>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The UN weather agency said ozone could recover to 1980 levels &#8211; before any hole in the ozone layer appeared &#8211; by around 2066 over the Antarctic if current policies remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Matt Tully, Chair of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WMO<\/a>\u2019s Scientific Advisory Group on Ozone and Solar UV Radiation, said the organization\u2019s Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Program is continuously providing crucial support for ozone science by means of observations, analysis, modeling, data stewardship and capacity-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt is critical that observations of ozone, ozone-depleting substances and ultraviolet (UV) radiation are maintained\u00a0with the quality, resolution and global coverage necessary to account for changes in ozone over the coming decades,\u201d Tully said. \u201cMany factors will influence the expected recovery of ozone, which must be fully measured and understood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WMO\u2019s bulletin also provided details on strategies to protect human health and the environment from ultraviolet radiation while exploring the impact of weather patterns and a significant volcanic eruption, on the Antarctic ozone hole in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It states that the \u201c\u200b\u200btotal column ozone values in 2023 were within the range observed in previous years and in line with expectations, owing to the beginning of the decline of ozone-depleting chlorine and bromine in the stratosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While the bulletin details positive changes to the Antarctic ozone hole, it found that are\u00a0atmospheric events can have a big impact on how the ozone hole develops periodically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WMO said scientists still have some gaps in understanding these variables and will continue to monitor the ozone layer closely to explain any unexpected changes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new bulletin by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expected full recovery of the Ozone Layer \u00a0by 2045 over the Arctic and 2040 for the rest of the world.
