UNEP chief: Invest in nature, change habits, listen to youth to save the world

Executive Director of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Andersen said three things can save the world; namely “Invest in Nature, Change Habits, Listen to Young People.”

She made the remarks in a video on the new year 2020 which coincides with the United Nations’ 75th anniversary (UN75) which is observed under the theme of “Shaping Our Future Together.”

Andersen said “One, invest in nature because when we do that we invest in ourselves, our economies and our planet.”

She added “Two, change our habits, consume less, because when we do that, we will have enough resources for everyone.”

She concluded “Three, listen to the young people on our streets – galvanize leaders and demand action, to do more and to talk less.”

On this occasion, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said the UN is launching the Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals, the Organization’s blueprint for a fair globalization.

He also set out a video address to greet the New Year with a message of hope to the world’s youth.

He said “This year, my New Year’s message is to the greatest source of that hope: the world’s young people. From climate action to gender equality to social justice and human rights, your generation is on the frontlines and in the headlines. I am inspired by your passion and determination. You are rightly demanding a role in shaping the future. I am with you. The United Nations stands with you – and belongs to you.”

Guterres has previously said that the United Nations will feature in 2020 a large and inclusive global conversation on the role of global cooperation in building the future.

Starting in January 2020, the United Nations will hold dialogues around the world and across borders, sectors and generations. The aim is to reach the global public; to listen to their hopes and fears; and to learn from their experiences.

The United Nations was founded in 1945 to support collective action to realize peace, development and human rights for all. The UN75 initiative seeks to spark dialogue and action on how people around the globe can build a better world despite the many challenges they face.

While UN75 seeks to drive conversation in all segments of society – from classrooms to boardrooms, parliaments to village halls – it will place special emphasis on youth and those whose voices are too often marginalized or not heard in global affairs.

The Secretary General appealed to people everywhere to add their voices to this campaign: “We need your opinions, your strategies, your ideas for us to be able to deliver better for the people of the world that we must serve.”

Through the upcoming dialogues, UN75 aims to build a global vision for the year 2045, the UN’s centenary; to increase understanding of the threats to that future; and to drive collective action to realize that vision. Global opinion polling and media analysis will be conducted in parallel to provide statistically representative data.

The views and ideas that are generated will be presented to world leaders and senior UN officials at a high-profile event during the 75th Session of the General Assembly in September 2020, and disseminated online and through partners on an ongoing basis.
