The United Nations Development Program in Egypt (UNDP Egypt) and the American University in Cairo (AUC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration and collectively advance the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Egypt.
The MoU was signed on September 24, 2023, in an official ceremony at the American University in Cairo.
The MoU signifies a major step forward in the enduring commitment of both UNDP and AUC to foster collaboration and address crucial challenges in sustainable development.
This partnership seeks to harness the combined expertise, resources, and networks of both organizations to engender a lasting and positive impact on the lives of the Egyptian people, while contributing to the nation’s overarching priorities.
Within the framework of the MoU, several pillars of cooperation have been defined, including shared intellectual dialogues on pivotal policy and development issues, the undertaking of action-oriented research, and the facilitation of knowledge-sharing initiatives. This partnership also emphasizes evidence-based approaches to policy and programming, utilizing the expertise of AUC’s affiliated labs and centers. Furthermore, it offers students invaluable practical experiences, mentorship opportunities, internships, and real-world development challenges to prepare them as future leaders and catalysts for change.
A cornerstone of this partnership is the strategic mobilization of technology and innovation in service of the SDGs. UNDP and AUC will spearhead impact-driven innovation sprints, hackathons, and bootcamps, leveraging the extensive reach and influence of both institutions. The collaboration is also dedicated to instilling a culture of sustainability on campus, through simulation models, sustainable campus initiatives, and student-led outreach activities.
From his side, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative Alessandro Fracassetti said, “Today’s MoU signature reflects our commitment to informed, evidence-based development, driven by scientific inquiry, and emphasizes the vital role of partnerships with academic institutions. This collaboration empowers youth, aligns with Egypt’s National Priorities, and advances the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, we’ll work towards a future of progress, innovation, and sustainable impact.”
During the signing ceremony, the President of AUC Ahmad Dallal underscored the shared vision and unwavering commitment of AUC and UNDP in fostering positive change and tackling global challenges head-on. He emphasized the pivotal role of multi-stakeholder collaboration in propelling sustainable development and applauded the collective efforts that brought this partnership to fruition.
Learning and evidence serve as the bedrock towards advancing the SDGs and effectively addressing challenges like climate change, public health, and inclusive growth.
The UNDP is committed to investing in learning, both internally and in partnership with allies like the American University in Cairo.
