United Nations officials feted the World Youth Forum (WYF) which Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi opened on Saturday with sending a message of peace and love.
During the inauguration, Sisi called for launching constructive dialogue to attain a better future based on love and stability, adding that the forum – whose debut was two years ago – is meant to meet the Egyptian people’s aspirations, especially with regard to realizing integration among all people without discrimination based on religion, gender or color.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organizations (UNIDO) Li Yong commended the event as promoting the Sustainable Development Goals which underline the importance of empowering youths and getting them engaged in the decision-making process.
Guterres was keen to participate in the forum via a video message in which he said “Young people are critical agents of change”, driving transformation worldwide. But too many young people face barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
He added that “the United Nations Youth 2030 Strategy recognizes that we cannot achieve the Sustainable Development Goals without meaningful participation from young people.”
He said “I encourage you to keep pushing to overcome poverty and gender inequality, prevent armed conflict and end corruption and fight hatred and uphold human rights,” adding that “and I ask you to keep leading the pressure needed to address the climate emergency.”
For his part, UNIDO Director General Li Yong extolled the Egyptian government for buttressing such important initiative.
He said more than half of the world population is under 30 years old, noting that getting youths to be part of any development process is inevitable.
He added that the United Nations Youth Strategy, Youth 2030, urges youth’s full participation in efforts aiming to make the development, economic and industrial processes more sustainable.
He added that technology is not the sole means for creating jobs for youths, explaining that there is a change in labor market and industrial activities.
He noted that the UNIDO was exerting great efforts to generate jobs for youths and providing them with necessary tools to establish sustainable and lucrative projects.
He added that UNIDO and the Egyptian government are cooperating in a Program for Country Partnership (PCP) to support development projects in Egypt, create jobs for youths and get youths involved in the fourth industrial revolution in Egypt.
He concluded that the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 can never be achieved without the efforts of youths worldwide to create sustainable solutions to realize development.
