Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is proceeding with the march of Sustainable Development by Thursday’s opening of the third stage of “Bashayer El Khair” housing project in Alexandria.
This underlines Sisi’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the coronavirus crisis did not hinder Egypt’s efforts to continue its drive.
Bashayer El Khair project is meant to realize a quantum leap in developing slum areas in Alexandria in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
During the inauguration of the project, the president underlined the importance of upgrading all shanty areas in Egypt to ensure better living and health conditions for the coming generations.
The beneficiaries of the project are estimated to be more than 50,000 citizens.
More than 75 Egyptian companies took part in the two-and-half-year project.
The third stage of “Bashayer El Khair” is the largest for ditching an unsafe slum area in the Mediterranean Sea governorate of Alexandria.
It is not only the largest and most important part of the venture because of the number of the housing units established, but also because it will change the lives of families – who lived in tin houses – to enjoy their lives in urban houses.
The third stage includes the establishment of 11,000 housing units, three service zones, including an educational facility, hospital, mosques, church and a youth center.
A committee will be formed to select needy families who live in unsafe slum areas to get their housing units.
The project also comprises a 30-feddan investment zone, including cinemas’ complex, banks, cafes, restaurants, shopping malls and parking lots.
A documentary film was screened during the inauguration ceremony to show the slum areas before being upgraded and how this posed danger to people lives and how people who were living in these areas were suffering from the lack of utilities and services.
Changing these higgledy-piggledy areas into urbanized areas was almost impossible, but the president pledged to confront all challenges and go through this hard way to turn these poor areas into urbanized ones.
The president is keen to secure better life for the Egyptians through achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
