The “Egypt 2030 Hackathon” – which serves the Sustainable Development Goals – announced the eight winning teams – out of 35 participating teams – that are qualified for the second and final stage.
The event is organized by PepsiCo Egypt in tandem with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, its Rowad 2030 project, and RiseUp.
More than 100 competitors representing 35 teams competed to win the hackathon’s award.
Dr. Hala El Saeed, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that cooperation among the ministry, PepsiCo Egypt, and RiseUp underlined the state’s keenness on enhancing collaboration with development partners and magnifying the benefit of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and activities of the private sector.
Saeed said that organizing the “Egypt Hackathon 2030” competition contributes to achieving sustainable development goals by maximizing the role of youth, with a focus on one of the UN goals and some different topics each year.
The minister referred to the efforts exerted by the state and the ministry to encourage entrepreneurship.
She stressed that the Egyptian state aims to mobilize all available resources to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development though incentivizing the community’s participation in which the role of both youth and women is prominent.
The minister stressed the state’s keenness to support and encourage entrepreneurship and to finance small businesses with creative and innovative ideas.
Saeed pointed out that the state has adopted – through the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development – several efforts, topped by the launch of “Rowad 2030” project, which aims to empower youths to establish their own business, and, hence, promote the role of entrepreneurship in developing national economy and diversifying income resources.
For her part, Dr. Ghada Khalil, Director of the Rowad 2030 Project, said that the 2nd edition of the “Egypt 2030 Hackathon” competition witnessed the participation of about 100 representatives of young people with innovative ideas and projects aiming to provide solutions to develop the health and economic sector in Egypt, in order to achieve Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Shelbaya, CEO of PepsiCo Egypt, expressed happiness for this fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and RiseUp.
He said PepsiCo Egypt has been always keen to link its activities and initiatives to the Egypt Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
He said “over the past three days, PepsiCo Egypt and other participating bodies provided all needed support and training for competitors to qualify for the final stage.”
He noted that competitors showed outstanding enthusiasm to achieve their ambitions.
He added that the winning team in the final stage will get EGP 500,000 financial support from PepsiCo Foundation – the charity arm of PepsiCo.
He pledged to continue supporting youths and preparing a new generation of entrepreneurs.
For his part, CEO of RiseUp Abdel Hamid Sharara expressed delight for this partnership with PepsiCo Egypt and the Ministry of Planning.
He said this underlines the importance of cooperation between the private and public sectors and civil society associations to achieve genuine social development.
