PepsiCo Egypt announced “Rafiqi” team as the winner of the second edition of “Egypt 2030 Hackathon” – which serves the Sustainable Development Goals.
As the winner of the hackathon, Rafiqi team got a 500,000-pound financial award from PepsiCo Foundation – the charity arm of PepsiCo – in order to launch the startup. Rafiqi is a platform for improving the quality of lives of cancer fighters in Egypt.
PepsiCo launched the hackathon this year in tandem with RiseUP and under the patronage of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and its Rowad 2030 project.
The hackathon is meant to support innovative ideas in the health and economic domains in Egypt within the framework of Egypt Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The hackathon focused this year on the third, eighth and ninth UN Sustainable Development Goals which focus on good health, decent work and industry and innovation.
The finals of the hackathon witnessed a cut-throat competition among eight teams – out of 35 participating teams.
Mohamed Shelbaya, CEO of PepsiCo Egypt, thanked the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and Rowad 2030 for their strategic support for the competition.
He also thanked RiseUp for the outstanding organization of the contest and supporting entrepreneurs.
He urged private sector companies to support the coming edition of the hackathon and empower entrepreneurs.
For his part, CEO of RiseUp Abdel Hamid Sharara expressed delight for this partnership with PepsiCo Egypt and the Ministry of Planning.
He said support will be offered for the eight teams that managed to reach the finals, expressing enthusiasm for the coming hackathon in order to nurture innovative ideas.
