Egypt managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 2304 thousand tons and save equivalent oil by about 909,000 tons, according to the 16th periodical issue of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREAmeter).

The report – issued every three months – attributed this achievement to the leap realized in hydroelectric energy production which rose by 9% compared to last year, in addition to upping solar and wind energy production by up to 12.5%.

Moreover, about 22 gigawatts per hour have been generated from biofuel projects, according to the report.

This falls within the framework of the strategy of the electricity sector which aims at diversifying energy resources, expanding the use of renewable energy and rationalizing the use of natural resources.

This also goes in line with the national strategy for renewable energy which aims to up the renewable energy resources contribution to the total energy used to over 42 percent by 2035.

The NREAmeter report noted that the first pilot stage of the green hydrogen factory – established in the industrial zone in Ain Sokhna in the Suez Canal Economic Zone – was launched with a target production capacity of 15,000 tons of green hydrogen as feedstock for production of up to 90,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

Moreover, Egypt signed 23 memorandums of understanding with heavyweight international and local conglomerates for producing green hydrogen and green ammonia, the report said, noting that these projects are scheduled to be carried out in the coming years.

This reflects the authority’s outstanding achievement in promoting the use of renewable energy, which confirms its firm commitment to achieving renewable energy goals and improving the quality of life in Egypt.
