The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected the Nile Preneurs Initiative – which is sponsored by the Central Bank of Egypt – to be a partner in implementing a project for manufacturing ventilators to help in treating critical cases of coronavirus.
NASA chose 13 international companies alongside the Nile Preneurs Initiative out of 331 companies in 42 states.
Nile Preneurs Initiative CEO Heba Labib said the initiative is the sole African partner which NASA selected to get a license for manufacturing ventilators “VITAL”.
NASA made sure that the Nile Preneur Initiative has innovative potentials to develop and implement the project, Labib said, noting that this underlines the international confidence in the initiative and Egyptian youths.
The initiative will use local components in manufacturing ventilators.
The initiative’s designation center – which is sponsored by Banque Misr – will be in charge of implementing the project.
Director of the initiative’s designation center Ismail Tag-Eddin said the project is meant to develop ventilators designed by NASA in tandem with the California Institute of Technology and the US’ Mount Sinai Hospital.
The NASA-designed ventilators will contribute to saving lives of people suffering from respiratory problems and coronavirus.
The project will secure ventilators at suitable prices in comparison with similar devices.
NASA will allow using its designs of ventilators for free and will also follow up the stages of its manufacturing within the framework of its social responsibility efforts.
Tag-Eddin said the project caters for the initiative’s desire to develop ventilators in collaboration with an accredited international body.
NASA’s VITAL Ventilator was developed particularly for patients suffering from the coronavirus and respiratory failure.
The initial production stage will take two to three months in order to come up with an accredited device that would be approved by the Health Ministry before producing large amounts of it in collaboration with manufacturing partners.
NASA and the California Institute of Technology will follow up and assess the initiative’s performance in producing the ventilator.
The Nile Preneurs Initiative declared its engagement in a number of projects to support state efforts in the face of the pandemic.
These projects include producing face masks in tandem with the Planning Ministry, Banque Misr and the Industrial Development Bank as well as establishing a data base for coronavirus patients in Egypt to meet the needs of the Health Ministry in this regard.
The initiative also backed small and medium sized enterprises to keep going on using up-to-date technology through digital transformation programs.
