The AZ 110 was operated with an Airbus A320 and offered the most
sustainable flight experience ever on an ITA Airways medium haul route. The flight will be followed by a second one, the AZ 608, which will be operated on May 14 on the intercontinental Rome – New York route with an Airbus A330 departing at 10.15 a.m. from Fiumicino and landing in New York JFK at 2:00 p.m. local time.
SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) is designed to challenge the aviation industry by stimulating and accelerating innovation and change towards a more sustainable future and the decarbonization of the skies. It centers around a friendly competition, scheduled between 1-14 May 2022 in which the 16 participating airlines will implement their solutions to operate specific flights in experimental mode, testing a series of initiatives to further reduce aviation’s impact on the environment with the hope of transforming them in best practices for the future of the industry through the involvement of operators and customers.
In order to carry out this experimental operation in the most sustainable way, ITA Airways has developed and integrated a series of ‘extraordinary’ activities into its usual operating procedures, in coordination with all the departments involved in the project. With the objective of improving efficiency and reducing the environmental impact, these activities included flight and ground operations, the choice of the aircraft and alternative fuels, sustainable catering, waste recycling, a dedicated passenger experience plus the digital newsstand service and carbon offsetting.
In fact, both flights will have zero impact on the environment in terms of fuel emissions, neutralizing them courtesy of ITA Airways’ contribution to some reforestation projects in Africa and South America. Sustainability is one of the pillars of ITA Airways strategy from the first day of its activity and it is pursued also through the renewal of the fleet, which includes new generation aircraft with lower environmental impact. The Company thanks all the partners involved – ENAV, Aeroporti di Roma and Eni – for their effective collaboration in the completion of this project.
