A report by the cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) on plastic pollution said Egypt’s public and private investments in plastic waste recycling hit EGP 1-2 billion in 2022-2023.

The report said the volume of recycled plastic stood at about 1.5 million tons in 2022-2023, adding that nearly 1,800 people work in the plastic waste recycling domain in the same year.

The report referred to the Environment Ministry’s launch of a national strategy to curb the use of single-use plastic bags, especially through banning for-free distribution of single-use plastic bags and spreading awareness about their negative impact on health, environment, economy and society.

The report noted that the volume of plastic waste in Egypt recorded 2.5 million tons in 2022-2023 in accordance with the Environment Ministry statistics.

The report highlighted the main axes of plastic waste management in Egypt, which include recycling plastic, raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution, improving the infrastructure for integrated solid waste management, and adjusting labor conditions within the waste management system.

The report added that addressing plastic pollution requires a comprehensive approach that considers all stages of the plastic lifecycle—from production to consumption and finally to waste management—while minimizing pollution and waste at each stage. This approach aims to balance economic needs with concerns about the impact of plastic pollution.

The IDSC underscored the recommendations of a climate change and plastic pollution report issued by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in May 2023.

The recommendations called for promoting local policies to address plastic use, cutting carbon emissions from the plastic lifecycle, enhancing innovation in plastic production and waste management, and benefiting from integration between plastic and climate policies.
